Mercedes S-Class Coupe leaked

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the pre-motorshow leaked pics season, Geneva style. We had it for Detroit and now with the first big European show just weeks away we’ve got early doors views of some of the cars making their debuts.

Frankfurt 'concept' not really a concept - shocker

Including the all-new Mercedes S-Class Coupe. Now, this leaked – and apparently official – pic has been doing the rounds online and seemingly reveals that the finished car looks very, very like the concept version shown at Frankfurt. Surprise, surprise - not so ‘concept’ after all!

Expect the official version on the car shortly but for now we can see that the two-door S-Class is going to be a big old beast and, perhaps surprisingly, the styling influence is reaching up from the A-Class (and its derivatives) into the highest pillars of the Mercedes range. So we’ve got that slightly drooped bonnet line, prominent feature lines sweeping along the flanks to stop it looking too slab sided and a traditionally shallow and pillarless windowline.

The latter has been a defining feature of Merc coupes since the post-war period, this S-Class coupe meanwhile following the sleeker form for big two-doors originally laid down by the C215 CL of 1999. Still a handsome beast, you can pick one of those up for as little as £5K in the PH classifieds. Which is tempting.

S-Class Coupe badge last seen on late 90s C140

This new one will probably set you back rather more, the range coming full circle, dropping the ‘CL’ badge adopted by the monster W140 S-Class derived version in 1996 and reverting to the ‘S-Class Coupe’ name that car launched with when it replaced the SEC in 1992.

More details soon. If only we’d just driven a close rival like, say, a newly updated Bentley Continental GT to help put it into context. Wait a minute…

that car is just a mess of miss proportions and bad angles

the door looks like its fitted from a toy car, the front looks like its been next to a blow torch and everything melted, the rear third looks like it came for an over sized scale model

Agreed. Every time I see how cheap they are to buy, I remind myself about the ABC suspension and potential for massive borkage.

SLCs are vey' cool - the SEC is it though, and always will be. Sacco's absolute finest hour. I once wrote one off in the most spectacularly crap and pointless accident you could imagine. Proper Police Academy driving. Haunts me to this day - of all the accidents I've had, that was the most lame. It was such a lovely car.

+2 I just got rid of mine a CL600. Loved it had such a silky smooth engine and even managed to do 30 mpg on the motorway with the cylinder deactivation. But I ended spending way too much on it, sadly they are going to become uber rare as they are so expensive to keep on the road.

SEC is a bit 'mullet and gold chain' for me
this was my 500SLC

I think that looks fantastic. Maybe in a decade's time once the depreciation has brought it within my reach...

I'm in the market for a big coupe at the moment, and although I can't come anywhere near affording the new one, those 215 CL's do look mighty tempting, but I'm just too afraid that if I buy one it'll immediately go spectacularly wrong and bankrupt me.

or more accurately the least appreciated/attractive S-class coupe...but quite possibly the best built?

I think there are some design similarities with the current BMW 6 Series.
