Mate of mine at work has a 2006 Golf+ 1.4 TSi which has lunched itself- suspected timing chain failure. He can't find a garage that is willing to even open the engine (apparently they are a bh to work on). It has had a camera down a plug hole and the valves are a mess. He has been advised to find a 2nd hand or rebuilt engine. Doesn't seem to be many of them around either! Apparently he found one which was about £2.5k. Car would appear to be worth about £4k.

He's come to me for advice from a "car person", but I'm at a loss as to what to say to him . . .

If anyone knows a good indie VW specialist in kent I'm all ears.

Similar to my first thoughts hence why I don't know what to say! Might just tell him to go park it somewhere near some flood water and hope it rains a bit more.

This is a difficult situation. I take it the 2.5k is just for the engine? You will have the transplant costs on top of that.

If he isn't a car person then he wont even be interested in breaking it for spares in order to lessen the blow. He might have to write of that 4k and move on.

we had a similar position with my OH MR2 the cost of replacing the seized brakes was more than 50% of the car, although being drivable we could at least PX it and let the dealer dump it on the auctions

I didn't even know they had 1.4 TSI engines at that age! Could he find an engine that's more common (ie cheaper) and fit that instead?

My "friend" had a car that had similar failings. Strangely it got nicked off his drive while he was on holiday for a week.

Just going on the info I've been given that it's a 1.4 TSi. According to wiki it was first released in 2005 on the Mk5 Golf.

There's probably other engines that would fit but that would involve changing wiring looms, ECU's, cooling system, all sorts of things that you probably wouldn't expect to and would end up costing more.

Apparently a place in Erith will do it for under a grand, but googling their name doesn't look too encouraging, put it that way.

I'd hunt around for an engine. I had to replace with daughter's Mini engine. BMW wanted £3600 for an exchange. Eventually I found one in Manchester and got it for £1100 delivered to a local indie. Took about half a day on web and ringing round. Fitting was another £1200. The replacement was nearly new with 22k on the clock. Ours had 66k.

£1200 in labour alone?!

If you PM me the name of the place I can give you an opinion, I used to live in Erith and have used most of the garages around there.

IIRC the 1.4 has the same problem as the 2.0 which is the timing chain tensioner is ste, it lets the chain go slack and bad things happen. Its a design fault and the part has been completely redesigned, I read a thread about gtis that had all suffered the same problem, must be that legendary VW quality I keep getting told about. On the thread I read the cars were newer than this one, but they were getting a hand out from VW to cover some of the cost, but the bill wa still into four figures.

Anyway, point being if he does find another engine, change the tensioner as it goes in.

Had problems with the timing chain on my Leon 1.4 TSI, needed replacing at about 54k miles as it developed a loud rattle and wasn't running right. Picked up by extended warranty luckily otherwise would have been an expensive repair. Seems to be caused by the chain stretching over time due to poor oil changes. Common problem especially on older cars. New version of this engine has reverted to cambelt.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, will pass them on so he can call round.

I've run an old VW for the last 8 years and it's a real trooper, I've taken it from 160000 to 260000 miles, but I always work on it myself so when people ask me for garage contacts I haven't a clue as the car has never been to a garage (apart from MOT's) since I've owned it. These new fangled engines do scare the bejeezus out of me. I rebuilt the 2.0 16v lump in mine on the drive using a socket set and a torque wrench, easy peazy, and it's done 80k since I did that. TBH the only reason I opened it up was as it needed new valve stem seals and thought I'd give it a refresh while I was there as the parts weren't too expensive and it was a bit of a challenge to keep me sane after I got made redundant. Wouldn't touch a modern VAG product tbh.

I have a similar problem: five year old Golf Bluemotion and big ends/oil pump failure. I haven' really got the option (ie money) to scrap the car (full VW service history apart from last oil change and, apart from the engine, car is in excellent mechanical condition) and buy something better.

I checked eBay (and various forums) and a 60K mile engine was £800 (and they can go at 60K) but another outfit were selling a rebuilt one for £1300 or so fitted! I then checked the second outfit on Google and the first three links were: "Watchdog", RAC and Trading Standards! I went on the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers (or Rebuilders?) site and, after checking out another firm, ordered a remanufactured engine with a year's parts and labour warranty for £2106 delivered and they will collect the old engine when the local garage have done the swap. There's another £500 or so of clutch, fluyheel and cambelt etc going in and I expect the garage may want something for their services. However, I will end up with something that's probably more reliable then a £5000 replacement (ie dealers' price for mine), so it will be worth £3000 or so to save it!

OTOH, I may p/x it in a couple of years if I find a car that is reliable (ie one that hasn't a modern VW engine)!
