Volvo S60 V8 Supercar: Time For Coffee?

S60's V8 is fired up for the first time; you thought five-cylinder Volvos sounded good...

Volvo and touring cars goes way further than BTCC wagons, with Polestar fettled S40s and C30s doing the business in Swedish and world touring cars for a while now. Then last year came the announcement that Volvo and Polestar would team up again for a V8 Supercars effort.

This was surely great news for touring car fans; possibly the world's most exciting tin-top series would be bolstered by the arrival of another European interloper, and mighty fine it looked too. It opened up the potential for a road car too of course...

Now we have the first spec details and noise from the V8 to be used in the S60 V8 Supercar. It sounds special even before it's started: 650hp and 487lb ft from a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 with eight throttle bodies and a 7,500rpm limiter. It's actually based on the 4.4-litre V8 Volvo used in the S80 (plus of course found turbocharged in the Noble M600) but the block and heads are now aluminium amongst what must be a wealth of other tweaks.

The noise is a violent, angry, blaring V8, with hints of the Ferrari 458 to it. We'll hear more when the S60 V8 Supercar completes its first test on Saturday.

Enjoy.

Oooooohhhh....

The naughty Volvo.

Or am I the only one that remembers that particular marketing campaign?

Is it me or is Volvo the only manufacturer making any effort to maintain and build a decent, respectful racing/motorsport heritage currently? I know this is polestar..... But surely Volvo themselves must have some input.

I see no other manufacturer making any such effort. AMG maybe?

At the root of this is Volvo's despairing need to attend to the lack of long term provenance of their Polestar sub brand.

Unfortunately rather than allure to, maybe build honestly and with some patience on their long history of motorsport success dating back to Jogindher Sing winning the Safari Rally in a PV 544 in 1965 through the mad 240 turbos of the '80s, to TWR with 850s, S40s etc, then Prodrive's S60s in the WTCC we have Volvo blatantly misrepresenting the Polestar brand's provenance by associating Polestar Racing (founded 2005) with Volvo's earlier, unrelated successes with other contractors in a presentation at the Chicago show and now in this vid. publishing a blatant lie about Polestar's 20 years as an engine builder.

They are rewriting history for their own, hoped for short term gains and overlooking and airbrushing out the true value of their longer term history.........

You can still get the XC in a V8 though, cant you? Maybe not in England though...

Awesome video. BMW take note, that's how you make a teaser trailer for a racing car/campaign/anything at all.

Plenty of other manufacturers manage it...

BMW
Audi
VW
Lexus
Toyota
Cadillac
Chevrolet
Holden
Infiniti
Nissan
Ford
Chrysler
Dodge
Jaguar
Etc

All make cars with V8 engines... Volvo needs a halo model IMO

Sounds a bit North Korea-ish... Do Volvo employees disappear a lot?

Used to be a proper Volvo fan - had several turbocharged bricks and still have a huge urge to get an old 240 Turbo or something of that era but these days, it's all just a bit... uninteresting. Think the turning point for me was when the "R" died and became the "R-Design" crap instead. I still like the brand but they juts seem to have lost the character and to a degree, their identity.

And I agree, they desperately need an all guns blazing flagship model... with that soundtrack!

Me too on the 240 turbo front... a normally aspirated LHD 240 came up on ebay about 3 weeks ago, starting at sensible money....no bids and was taken off prematurely.... might well have chanced my arm on that as a project.
