I like using a head torch when working on my car, especially handy when working underneath. Bought one like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-LED-HEADLAMP-HEADLIGH... which was adequate in terms of light output but a few too many times whacking it off exhausts / etc meant the plastic bracket that holds the lamp against the head and allows it to swivel breaks really easily and quickly - fine for £2.40 but didn't last that long at all.

Can anyone recommend one that'll stand up to a bit more abuse? Preferably more metallic in it's construction so that it won't break so easily.

Plastic is probably the right stuff to make these out of, metal would be heavier... you just want a higher quality one. Watching this thread keenly for any recommendations because I need a head torch too.

I use a Petzl headtorch at work, they're not the cheapest but they're very robust.

If you've got the money then the Mammut X-Shot is a seriously good bit of kit and absolutely bulletproof (taking some pretty big chunks of ice hitting it from height). Alternatively, something from Petzl around the £30-40 mark will be almost as good.

I use one from Alpkit for cycling and climbing: https://www.alpkit.com/products/gamma

Seems to be just as good as any £30 Petzl I've used and great customer service.

I've got the Petzl MYO RXP for night photography, very well made.

I use a cheap Energizer one that I found in Tesco for working on cars. It's not as bright as a lot of the newer designs but I've stuck with it because it's quite slim so doesn't get caught on the underside of the car. It only cost £6 so I don't have to worry too much about abusing it.

I use that too - great piece of kit but not particularly sturdy IMO, well no more so than any other "normal" headtorch.

I'd agree. I have black diamond and alpkit headtorches and the alpkit is great for the price.
