So I have a dilemma.

We have e46 coupe
Mk1 mx5
And a golf. The golf is fine my missus does 30k a year in it so it's never here.

So I thought its a good excuse to scratch the v8 4x4 itch?

I want to spend as little as possible would love to insure on a classic policy if possible as will do 2k a year max.

So are V8 Cherokees 1998 vintage going to ruin me?

What else should I be looking at

V8 Grand Cherokees are fine.

Some dogs struggle to get in and out of high 4x4s though.

Join the club and get evil dirty ramblers giving you dirty evil looks and shaking theirs heads in disgust, as they walk towards you in the centre of the private lane as you drive to your parents house furious

But on a side note..... you get alot of car for your money with the Grand Cherokees and can be had for silly money! biggrin

The 93-99 Grand is known as a ZG when built in Austria. Personally I'd try for a 99-05 Grand Cherokee which are known as WJs in the US & WGs for the Austria built ones, the later cars are better & a major advantage for you is a much bigger boot as the spare is under the floor rather than at the side.

Give them a good taste of 6000rpm V8 noise as you pass them by smile

Snap I have a 4.0 non LPG p38 does 2k per year but very handy and I don't care about it at all, intend to scrap it one day, only 100k on it so a few years left in the old beast! Bought for 1500 quid as well.

The purchase is just the start, engines and air suspension parts are considered consumables smile

That little rover V8 block just wasn't meant to be bored out to such a degree and with such worn out tooling.

Ah but check e bay for p38 part prices, uber cheap now, I had to change a couple of air bags on mine £65 each Dunlop ones as well, very cheap to run other than the 13\14 mpg I get out mine urban smile

Thank you, I'm getting away with a XJ40 as cheap to run because I never seem to need parts to fix any faults. Doubt I'd get away with a P38 yet...

The body's and chassis seem to hold up very well to corrosion and I personally quite like them.

I would have to do it properly though and replace the rover motor with a small block Chevy. More power, better reliability.

I would keep the air suspension, but upgrade it with better off the shelf commerical parts

If if was a landy enthusiast I can see where you are coming from, but that is not for me, I grudge spending any money on my hacks as it eats cash up for my toys smile

Mines full of hay and horse sh#t and like yours it will be scraped one day but whilst it goes through MOTs without a problem and doesn't break it stays.

I'm a p38 4.0 lpg chap too.

My German shepherd loves it. It's normally full of him and logs / rocks and other outside associated crap..

p38 rangey here, cheap as chips and low prices as a result of people being scared of EAS. Its basically an air bag in place of a spring and over time it deteriorates. Its the easiest thing in the world to replace...

1. lift car on to axle stands
2. Pull out air bag retaining clips
3. pull air line
4. drop suspension
5. pull out airbag
6. fit new airbag
7. replace clips
8. replace airline
9 drop car off axle stands
10. drive and laugh at people driving pretend 4x4's

£1500 got me a 4.6 HSE with 70k on the clock. I've spent £300 on parts to fix niggles and she is bullet-proof now.

Do it. You know you want to....
