Just spoke to my girlfriend, her cars oil temperature was going up and down from the red to cold. I told her to take it to the dealers as it sounded like the temperature sensor. The car is not even 2 year old and has 14,000 ish on. She's had it from new.

Anyways, the garage have phoned her saying it's been caused by high speed impact from a stone to the radiator causing the car to lose all of its coolant. As such it will be £250 ish to hopefully repair. As they're not sure if any other damage has been done

Car is a 1.2 Suzuki swift 1.2 that she plods to work in.

Warranties cover many things. I suspect accidental stone damage is not one of them.

This will be classed as accidental damage and therefore won't be covered.

Whether you will be able to claim for any further damage (ie if the head gasket has been damaged from over heating) will probably depend on how long she drove with the temperature in the red. I would be surprised if they would pay for it.

doubt it will be covered, unless there is some acknowledgement that poor design may lead to this being treated as component failure, but I think that's a long shot. I'be more concerned what damage has occurred with it overheating.

Why would accidental damage be covered under a warranty?

If you kerbed a wheel would that be? Or maybe drove into a wall, or a high speed rollover? Would those be covered?

Impact damage, regardless of what it was - Not warranty, it's a bit like getting a nail in a tyre, causes damage, but isn't a manufacturing defect

While I can see that it's accidental damage. It's not really caused by something that's been done. If that makes sense. I just feel a £260+ bill is a bit high for a 15 month old car

I'd suspect that's engine coolant temperature rather than oil temps, especially as there's mention of a cracked radiator

Wouldnt expect a radiator replacement to be under warranty. Seat fell off unexpectedly, fair enough, but accident as part of driving, not so much

Well...it has! Something's hit the radiator in the course of driving.

It sounds like it could happen to any car regardless of age. It's £260 because it's a dealer

So it's not your fault?
So why is it the manufacturer's fault?

TBH lucky it was caught early then. Even consequential damage to other components wouldnt be covered from this either so she could have wiped a fairly new engine out had she stuck her head in the sand.

dealer supply and fit new rad for £250 sounds good too me as well......

Stone on the road - not the fault of the manufacturer.

Stone flicking up into the radiator - not the fault of the manufacturer.

Stone damaging radiator - not the fault of the manufacturer.

Regardless as to the age of the vehicle concerned, the cost of purchasing a replacement radiator and the labour to fit it remains the same.

I don't see what gripe with the manufacturer the OP could have.

Wouldn't be covered if the car was 15 minutes old let alone 15 months. Irrelevant.

Would you expect a warranty to cover damage caused by a tree falling on it or flood water?

Sabb were pretty good with me when I had a 9-3 convertible. The heater dial snapped and I thought it would just be a case of pushing a new one in but they insisted I leave the car with them so they could replace the whole unit as they were prone to seizing.

Don't forget to sue for loss of earnings and hurt feelings. Maybe reject the car or claim whiplash too.
