With the bad weather, we always hear "not to make a journey unless it is essential."

What do you class as essential - school run? 20 bensons and the paper? Going to work?

I use common sense and make up my own mind rather than waiting for the television to advise wink

A Journey that must be started now, to catch a plane for instance.

Unless you miss it, you will never be able to do/learn/get that thing again.

When it snowed yesterday I took that to mean "going out to have some fun in the snow while I still have a RWD car."

With the price of fuel these days, does anyone actually make any journeys that AREN'T essential?

Arguably none of my journeys are essential as I walk to work and the shop but I have never once not traveled due to weather. I shall decide whether to go for a drive not anyone else. Also every time I've heard these warnings and gone out it's been largely lies and everything was fine so I don't believe them any more.

I don't think it makes a blind different to be honest, people are stupid.

What is essential to some is insanity to others.

Essential to me means earning a living, sending the boy to school & having food in the fridge.

I'm an expat in the US and it has been a little chilly of late. The coldest it has been for me this year was -14F / -25C and in the past couple of weeks has often been at -2F / -19C in the mornings. Those temperatures are before wind chill, which adds a genuine risk of frost bite.

Everybody seems to have adopted an attitude of just getting on with it. They remove the snow from their car, shovel the driveway and pavement in front of their house, drive to work as they normally do and then do all the stuff they usually do as if nothing had happened. They dress more warmly and take more time to get to work - and that's it.

I think most Britons who haven't experienced this would think we were insane.

Work - light drizzle - arguable
Holiday flight - 20 feet of snow - essential.

This is a forum frequented by petrol heads, so most definitely yes!

Stupid statement is stupid.

Most of my journeys are non-essential.

Getting to work, really, is the only daily essential. I think when they give out guidance like that it's a pointer for stupid people to avoid travelling 300 miles in 30 ft snow drifts to see auntie mabel in auchtermuchty, who they remember is quite lonely and bakes a nice cake.

I think it is code for 'If you are going to gawp at the flood/snow/blown over trees then stay out of it cos some of us have work to do and places we need to be!'

My wife has been using it as an excuse not to attend 'managment / corporate' events of late, she is loving the weather right now. "Go to Birmingham to hear 4 hours of sales pitch disguised as continued professional development??? Sorry, it's flooded here!"
