'Ring, reverse gear, what would be fastest?

Ok, forget about the 918, P1, La Ferrari 'Ring times it's time to turn your idle conjecture and ill informed guesswork to a more pressing question. Namely what car do think could drive round the Nurburgring in reverse gear the fastest in the usual direction? I'm going to go left field and suggest this........



.....a Tatra 613 LWB, I believe. It has a long wheelbase so should be quite stable, a largish V8 and is rear engined/air cooled which should again help directional stability and also, would not suffer from it's radiators being out of the airflow for an extended period. What would your choice be? No EV's or Hybrids


Can't help thinking there is Mercedes with a 2 speed reverse gearbox out there

I'm going with a fast track tractor, as many reverse gears as forward. And limits to about 50mph.

Light Car Company Rocket - it had a sequential gearbox from a motorcycle which did not have a separate reverse gear. Gordon Murray fitted it with a selector that reversed the direction of the drive so it had just as many gears in reverse as it did going forwards.

Good shout.....the early Daf Variomatic's had no restrictor on reverse and would go as fast backwards. My first motor was a 33 van !!

Mmmmmmmm...I should have been more strict with the entry criteria. Passenger cars with conventional transmissions please. Btw, can cars with a CVT like the DAF go as fast backwards as forwards?

A nissian leaf with the reverse limiter removed as it doesn't have a reverse gear it just reverses the motordrive

I'm not sure about CVT cars, I would assume they are limited??

I remember seeing a video on YouTube a while ago called Car Olympics or something like that, in which they did a race in reverse. I seem to remember the Lincoln Towncar was pretty nippy...

I think the XJS did 70 odd backwards from that sort of era, I might be wrong but it rings a definite bell.

Something like a Tesla? Presumably without a gearbox, the electric motor could just be put in reverse and it'd be able to do pretty much top speed in reverse..?
