All this wet weather!

It must be very bad for those whose houses have been flooded in the current round of bad weather. Which if I understand it correctly us the result of the jet stream being further North this year.
I have sympathy for those who live well away from watercourses, and flood plains, who have been flooded. But find this is somewhat reduced for those, who have bought houses on rivers, or on or near flood plains which have done just that, flooded. (and have done so for thousands of years into the past) It seems they are complaining about what is happening now, (in particular about the responses of the emergency services, who must be up to their necks in it at the moment)
and there seems to be an attitude with some, that they don't want to help themselves. but are expecting help to come down from above. (I think this was highlighted in another post, which described a perfectly fit / young family sitting in a rescue boat, being pulled along by rescue worker, when they could easily have just used a pair of wellies and walked along themselves)
It may be that because of where their houses are, they cannot get insurance for flood damage, but if a person buys a house in that kind of area, it would seem to be a risk they know they have taken, and an event that could be expected to happen at some point in time.
I am glad in some respects all this water has fallen as rain, because if the same amount had fallen as snow, it would have been so deep the whole country would be at a total standstill.
At least with the rain, people can still largely get to where they need to be. It would not be the same as trying to get somewhere through several feet of snow. The problem with snow is that with ice and snow is that we still get all the disruption. skids. crashes etc, and then the dirty snow / ice mix with grit phase, but thus is followed by the thaw from which we THEN get the floods (several million tons of water, is several million tons of water no matter which way it falls on us) Hopefully this is the worst this winter will get?
