Sold as seen - Trader - Legal?

Hi,

Bought a car from a trader. Well it said trader on Auto Trader. I have a screenshot of this as the ad is now gone since the car is sold.

If on the receipt it says sold as seen does this mean tough if it breaks.

I have had it since 20th January 2014. I part exchanged my car in for it and he filled in the traders part of my old car's V5.

Basically there are a few problems which was never mentioned in the ad.

Erratic speedo (Common on my car. Easy fix if nothing is seized) Speedo sometimes reads 0 while I am travelling causing the car to judder as its not getting fuel.
Tonight the front wheel started to knock. Only for about 20 seconds then it stopped.
Has a squeak on engine.

None of this happened when I took it for a test drive.

Do I have any come back with this?

The car is a Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia 2001.

You bought a 13 year old car and you're surprised when a few things go wrong?

From what you've said the car wasn't sold with these problems without your knowledge, they have developed over the time you have owned it. Your problem in my opinion.

A trader can not absolve his responsibilities by selling "sold as seen". However you have bought an old car, no doubt quite cheaply, and the law allows for minor defects/wear and tear etc. so I doubt the trader will be either interested or obligated to fix them.

Sounds ok to me a 13 year old car normally has a few rattles and squeaks...

For me when I buy a banger I just accept it's going to have some faults and deal with it myself - that's why I make sure to check everything before handing any money over because after that point it's not worth trying to get things fixed.

No speedo would be a pain but if it works most of the time on a sub £1k car it wouldn't bother me.
Talk to the dealer and see what he says - if you try and use the SoGA to force a resolution on a £1000 car don't expect much in return - A cheap car is a cheap car.

ECU may (does on some cars) take a reading of the speedo and act accordingly.

Nova/Corsa Mk3 (Bubble) for one will certainly get a CEL with a broken speedo cable.

Dodgy dash on a Focus of this vintage is incredibly common. Used to be £100 from Ford, not sure if they still are.
