Small'ish 4x4 10K budget

This is a question on behalf of my Mum who will no doubt ignore any advice I give her and instead listen to some ignorant sod she's bumped into in the local grocery store but I can but try !

Her requirements are

4X4
Up to 60k miles
Automatic
Budget £10kish
Must have leather
Not used for towing
Decent ground clearance to negotiate country tracks (horsey type)
Her thoughts so far are X Trail but I'm after alternatives
Combined mpg as close to 40 as possible (therefore diesel?)
Not a land rover/freelander
4 doors

A big ask I think but I'm hoping someone will know better

You won't get 40mpg from an auto SUV. Maybe on a very gentle long run, or if you drive really carefully,but in everyday driving mid 30's is more the mark. X trail's have had turbo issues, so try the Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4,both are 2wd until you need the extra grip then the other end of the car chimes it electronically.

although the diesels may be high mileage at that price. I recently saw a 2.5 petrol with less than 30k miles for about 11k, although I picked up a 3.0 for much less

Touareg 2.5TDIs can be had for <10K now but MPG is low to mid 30s.

I'm in the market for something similar. I was going to suggest a Dacia Duster but it looks like they only have cloth interior.

I'd question whether you can get 40MPH from an Outback. If you can good on you / fair enough.

Skoda Yeti is top of my list.

I dont think you will get a Tiguan for < 10K

Volvo XC60 or XC90 ?
Suzuki Grand Vitara ?
Kia Sorento ?

But I think the above mpg would be 30ish and not 40ish

oh you will defo get that speed out of a 240bhp, 3.0 outback! and at that speed you might average 40mpg

So far mine is averaging 27mpg. but it was considerably cheaper than a higher milage outback diesel (I have no idea what the real world MPG of the boxer diesel is). I looked at yeti's but to get one with 4x4, leather and low mileage, would probably cost me double the purchase price of my 2007 outback - a difference which buys me loads of extra gas! and covers the heavy road tax for a few years

I was pretty impressed with the yeti, all the same, and might upgrade our 10 year old Jeep to a newer yeti at some point

The cheapest yeti with 4x4 within 50 miles of me is listed at 12k

no way will an automatic 4x4 get near 40mpg, be lucky to get low 30`s.

Jeep patriot. Has the VW TDI engine. My dad had one and loves it. Been reliable over the last 3 years,

His is manual, and being honest not sure if they do an auto!
