Great cars, always wanted one. Maintenance/condition/belt changes the key here I reckon.

A poor mans supercar.these can do 170 odd when tuned so you can imagine how they can be made to go between 0 and 100.
Yes you can pick them up cheap but that will reflect their condition.
Check for cracked manifolds and cambelts that are due for changing although the engine doesnt need to be removed for the belt.circa £500.

Wasn't brave enough to buy a turbo.. But love everything else. Service history is everything, buy a standard car with a huge pile of receipts. In yellow.

Really enjoyed my 20v turbo.

Always felt quick and I like the looks as long as theyre colour coded but shifted it when the belts were due and the manifold started to crack.

Are they really that quick/compared BHP per £ compared to Jap offerings?

In theory one of these would be a great car for me but I've always ignored them once I start looking into their performance and potential as 'Good' but not great.

Happy to go against the grain, I drove one maybe 7 years ago and thought it rubbish.

Worst gearbox of any vehicle I have ever driven, at the time I had a 300 bhp MR2 turbo and the Fiat admittedly standard felt very weak at the top all mid range and nothing else, old school type turbo, horrid torque steer as well. Barge handling, very nose heavy understeery.

Also seem rather unreliable from what the owner of the one I drove had to say (back then substantially older now), he would only buy from an independent specialist as he said they were too high risk with cooling problems so wanted a vetted car & now I see one a daily basis parked up thats not moved for months on end as presumably broken, everytime I walk past I wonder what anyone sees in them they are rather ugly and slab sided.

Classic bit of 90's car design IMO. Sharp looking coupe with a great interior- love the bare metal dash and the 'plus' addenda in later cars. A proper icon which influenced later designs (Bangle- shudder )

Sorry i couldnt possibly know the answer to that.
all i can say is std 220bhp 0-60 in 6s
100 in 14.5s and top speed limited to 155 do youll have to be the judge against whatever it is you have in mind as your jap comparison.
I believe one coop managed 175 in 5th gear with another gear to go hence the tongue in cheek super car reference.....
