With all the current hype for the 'best driver's car of the moment' is it worth looking at the earlier cars - the 5th Gen (02-05)?

Totally different car and engine. Nice enough, but never a class leader.

Have you considered a Clio 182/197?

I was always under the impression it was very "lardy" in comparison to its rivals.

I don't think it was ever intended to be class leading, my Mrs has one for a runabout and loves it but it's never going to worry a Clio 182 etc. A 6th gear and another 40 bhp is what the old ST needs smile.

An 8 to 10 year old Fiesta that's been driven hard - sounds like a perfect choice wink

5 years ago when I bought an ST my first choice was a Clio 172, but judging by the ones I looked at then Clio's were more likely to be hammered and show it.

What about the Mountune ones?

From what I read without driving a fiesta ST it is transformed by the Mountune 185 kit and some shorter springs. Some even get supercharged which must make them very interesting.

Not as quick or frantic as a clio as standard but they seem better screwed together and less troublesome.

Should have had the Focus engine in it, power wasnt enough for what it needed to be against the rivals at the time

So is the Fith Gen one doesn't sound all that nimble & fun?

I wouldn't mind a little run around which is lightweight and has a bit of poke

You mean the mk5 zetec-s? The 2.0 ST was the mk6.

Never driven one but it still needs a 6th gear.

As in the giant 2.5 Volvo turbo that would never have fitted in at all, without the front end looking so bulbous it'd be borderline hideous and grossly nose heavy?

Agreed it could have done with some more oomph, though, a sixth gear wouldn't have hurt either as a friend ran one and it wasn't the best of cruisers.

How about a Puma? Basically a Fiesta anyway, cheaper and by all accounts (mine included) a very nice drive indeed.

Do you know anything about these cars at all?

Have you ever driven one?

The thread is about the mk6 fiesta ST which is not basically a puma like the mk5 is.

I was thinking more the 170hp Duratec version to keep it somewhere near what Renault were kicking out at the time with the 172. The RS one would definitely make it go quicker though!

the 170 "duratec" of the ST170 was an average engine at best. The standard 130 Zetec of the time was a nicer allrounder. It was infact the earlier Zetec with VVT and a some intake tweaks.

The Fiesta ST had the chain driven mazda engine used in caterhams etc, and although not the fastest could be made to have 10-12 bhp more from a good induction kit and replacement flexi pipe from milltek alone(rumoured to be intentially restricted for insurance reasons)

Some Eibach springs with with above thrown in made the car a much nicer allrounder, and still very reliable

The point I was trying to make was the power output of the Focus was more inline with what Renault and a few others were putting out, Ford were lower down the power figures or higher up the model range to get like for like. A Focus shouldn't really be making the equivalent power to a smaller class car like the Clio, Renault showed them that with the Megane, which was something in the 225 range?

The Zetec engine I actually have quite a lot of time for, the bottom end is pretty strong and it'd take to being turbo'd without too much stress, I've seen Zetec turbos and ZVH Turbo making some really good power figures. Done right it'd see some decent gains over stock
