What is the most improved model?

Which model of car (in your opinion) has made the biggest improvement from one generation to the next?
This is possibly the most obvious one.

An Escort in anything but name.
However, thinking more carefully (not all Escorts were bad - RS models for instance).
How about this?
Not a bad car by all means but far from best in class

Arguably one of the best cars in its class all things considered. The mk1 Octavia was also a fine car that finally showed that Skoda meant business but it doesn't really have a direct model that preceded it.
However, having borrowed a 2005 one of these as a courtesy car recently (it was horrible), I would have to say this:
to this (I know there was another one in between but that was just as horrid). If I was in the market for a new supermini, this would definitely be on my shortlist, as I think it's the best looking (although I haven't driven one).

Actually the Focus was a rather large departure from the Escort.However, thinking more carefully (not all Escorts were bad - RS models for instance).
You're right though that not all Escorts were bad, that's a Mk5 pictured, the Mk5 was a massive fail, Mk5 to Mk6 is probably a good contender for the thread though.
eta: he also missed a Focus, that's a Mk1.5

Was the mk6 really that much better than the mk5. I know the Focus was an all new car but they could have called it an Escort (as that is what it was replacing). I guess the Escort had earned a bit of a rep for being a bad car though, so they wanted a fresh start. My winner for this though is the Fiesta mk5 to mk6. The mk5 was a really poor car - awful damping, low quality components throughout, really unrefined etc. The mk6, whilst expensive compared to the competition, is pretty good.

The R34 was a good car though?Re: Escorts, the press slated the 5 and lauded the 6. I ran a 6 for about a year, from my experience it was very good as plain old cars go, not fast, fair bit of roll but neutral, predictable, could be pushed into oversteer. It was robust. Endearingly so.

I've never been a ford fan. But the gap from Cavalier to Insignia is massive. My last Cav was a 2L GLI petrol which gave me circa 40 MPG, good acceleration and comfort on a long journey. Add to that well over legal cruising speeds. Insignia diesel ,I've hired ones with few miles but economy is excellent, as is performance and acceleration. Mondeos I've hired had similar economy, but lacklustre performance.
The comparison between Felicia and Fabia interested me, as I've had both over a period of time. Biggest difference is bodywork quality. The Felicia was prone to rust. Both drive similarly. But there is a similarity to BL/BMC cars, my Felicia never leaked, but rusted like a BL/BMC, whereas the Fabia had more leaks than any BL/BMC I've ever owned. Biggest difference is that Fabia is diesel and has torque and economy.
