I see Car Salespeople ain't changed.....
Discussion
Out shopping today….. not looking for test drives or anything as we were simply narrowing down the choice, but they weren’t to know that. We were primarily looking at seat configurations and boot space. So we had the odd question or two….
In my book selling cars ain’t rocket science. Spot punter. Introduce yourself. Ask if they need help. If they don’t then leave them to browse and come back in 10 mins. If they do then stay to answer their questions. Simples.
Citroen to look at a C4 Grand…. Had them outside unlocked so we were able to get straight in… We were there a good 15 minutes and saw the grand total of zero salespeople. We left
Peugeot….. Received good service. Answered questions etc.
Ford… Cars locked but in full display of salespeople yet we had to go inside to get their attention. Asked to see two cars. They unlocked them and then left. No introductions. No see you in two mins. Never saw them again. We looked and left.
Vauxhall ….. Went inside and they happened to have the two cars we wanted to see inside. A couple of minutes looking at a car only to discover boot was locked…. A look over to the 7 salespeople over in the corner drew nothing. Lady B had to walk over to ask for help….. ah the battery must be dead. I was then asked if I wanted to see in the boot to which I told them well yes, I need to know how much space there is….. I’ll get a jump pack came the reply. In the meantime we wandered over to the other model we wanted to view and was having a bit of difficulty moving the seats etc. Did I get help? Did I f
k. I was told it was a special edition called the Capital. I asked what model it was based on and was told the Techline….. I decided not to tell the poor salesguy that there was no suck model as the Zafira Techline…… He told me the Tourer model had a bigger boot…. I told him that I didn’t know as they were unable to lock it.
Volkswagen. Wandered into showroom and spent 6-7 mins looking at a car . Again no one approached us so we left.
I do have one question for all the sales people… Do they actually want to sell anything?

I just cant understand this. I used to sell cars (not for a main dealer I might add) and if a body strayed onto our forecourt there would be a scrabble for salesmen to get out of the door and to "get into them." If you let people walk without at the very least getting a name and phone number then you were going to be able to count your future car sales career in hours rather than days.

This is the best way. I want to look at a car, not be hounded by by some derp who wants comission. I don't walk into tesco's and get followed around by one of the staff asking me if i want to buy bacon. If i want to know more about the bacon, i'll ask.Actually went to a dealer today as Mrs HD wants a new Audi on PCP.
Went to Robinsons Audi in Norwich, warmly greeted by the pretty girls on reception and told to take a look around and come back to them if we needed a question answered or to speak to a salesman.
They pretty much had one of every model in the showroom, all unlocked and we were left to bugger about opening the boots and sitting in the cars.
Asked to speak to a salesman, waited about a minute till somebody was free and then sat down. We were offered and brought a nice coffee.
The salesman asked what we were looking for and we explained which model, which options and what deal.
He explained everything very well, no bulls
t and appraised her car for a trade in, offering a very fair price.
He said he will look through the company stock to see if they have what we want (we gave him a few variations on colour & trim) and sad he will contact us Monday.
Have to say if was a very professional and pleasant experience all round.

Great input. Well done. Grocery shopping is JUST like buying a car. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't in car sales. I am extremely happy to have left the game now! Some people get shirty when you approach them, others whinge that no one has spoken to them you just can't win!
If you complain you have been in a dealership for 7 minutes and no one has spoken to you, clearly you like to be hounded immediately. I would personally have given someone a good ten minutes to look around so they feel comfortable. If they settle on a car sooner then fine, but most just say "I'm just looking" and turn away. I see no problem in finding a salesman and asking for their help. From a buyers perspective this is how I would like it to work.

Great input. Well done. Grocery shopping is JUST like buying a car. After a brief stint in car sales I also get this.
The number of cars you sell at a major franchise is only half the story, its all about conversion ratios (number of people you register vs. number of sales). I noticed how experienced salespeople would ultimately only wish to speak to customers they saw as sure things, a casual browser shopper would take up a lot of your time and mess up your ratios...Poor ratios ultimately led to termination. Salespeople turnover was incredibly high.

This does amaze me when car salesmen do this, it happened when we were looking to replace the Mrs car.
I always go out and ask if they need any help. If they want to look at particular car then will then ask if they want to be left alone for 10 minutes or if they would like me to show them around the car.
Seems quite obvious to me.....

I can't understand it either as don't car salesmen get slaughtered if they get a bad mystery shop report?HD Adam said:

Sorry Adam, you seem to be on the wrong forum. We don't like car salesmen around these parts Went to Robinsons Audi in Norwich, warmly greeted by the pretty girls on reception and told to take a look around and come back to them if we needed a question answered or to speak to a salesman.
