Had my AA renewal through today. Skimmed through the letter and noticed the price. Thought it was a little steep so I've just checked on-line.

I'm covered for all the breakdown bits and bobs plus the parts and labour repair scheme. Seem to remember it was about £250 last year. Renewal according to the letter is £383.33.

Just done an on-line quote for the same coverage and price comes in at £257.40. I haven't even bloody needed to use them.

Nice way to treat loyal customers rolleyes

Keep an eye on your automatic renewals folks.

My RAC came through at 56 for me and the wife or are you talking about insurance here?

Mine was exactly the same, so shopped around and ended up going with ADAC, for the Partner Plus option (for the whole Kinky family) at a cost of c. £90. Signed up on Tuesday. Membership cards arrived today smile

I would take a look at the premium bank accounts from LBG and Barclays etc. usually for £10 a month you get breakdown cover, travel insurance, mobile phone insurance and a whole host of other things. Seems to work out cheaper overall, might be worth taking a look and seeing if the products would suit you.

My AA cover was £155 and I got £60 back with quidco. So £95 for breakdown repair and a few other options is quite good.

Took 8 months to get the cashback though!

Every year AA try to sting me for a massive increase in price.

Every year I phone them up and tell them I'm only paying the price available on the website to new customers.

Every year they agree. It's a little dance we do. smile

Same for car insurance. Change every year.

And house insurance.

Get your details in Gocompare or whichever generic insurance checker and it takes about 10mins to get a new quote and save literally hundreds - every year.

On another note, my daughters insurance renewal came through from Admiral. Not made a claim and an 'extra' £200 for the coming year. Didn't even call them to ask them why, just got insurance £250 cheaper somewhere else. Then when she called to cancel the renewal with Admiral, they ask, 'why are you changing it?' . She said ' Send a stupid quote, loose your business'. It annoys me they want you to call them and think you are doing well by them dropping the premium while you speak to them' Idiots.

+1 for phoning them

I can't be bothered to change, but I do beat them back down.

Personally it really cheeses me off how well valued current customers are, but that't modern business in Britain,

I used to do the same, until I got fed up and switched to GEM. They too have 'brand new customer only deals' but they're generally only a wee bit better than the usual renewal price (which itself is very competitive).

Can't comment as to the quality of GEM's service though as I've not had to call them out.

This. Just got my renewal through the other day and it was around £70 more than last year. Phoned them and said I was moving to RAC because they were cheaper, they soon dropped the price right back down.

No, breakdown and repair cover.

I'll give them a buzz on Monday. Happy to pay the price that's quoted on-line otherwise I'll go elsewhere.

Just smacks of an attempt to rip people off who don't bother to check the renewal price.

For breakdown (roadside, recovery, home start, onward travel) I use AutoAid - £39 a year and you pay for recovery and claim it back.

My A6 was recovered today, cost £92 and I'll report how long it takes to get it back.

I'm with them. Used them twice over the years and got the money back within a week with no quibbles. I like them because they send the nearest recovery truck rather than a van. Both times arrived within 40 minutes. Plus the fact they're dirt cheap. I can't understand why anyone pays more.

Do they always send a truck? I told them it wasn't driveable and had a snapped drive belt so assumed that was why.

You shouldn't even be paying the standard price for new customers. I've just rejoined, by phone: a simple statement that the price quoted seemed a bit steep and I was going to shop around was enough to elicit another substantial discount.

It pisses me off a bit that there's one (steeply inflated) price for the naive/lazy, but that the telesales staff are obviously given substantial leeway for discounts for anyone the slightest bit more savvy, but as you say, it's just a little game you have to play once a year.

We just changed to Autonational rescue for Mrs1rolls car, they are the "non pay up front" arm of autoaid IIRC.
Cost was £66 for 15 months for the lot.
After having never broken down before, within a fortnight she came home on a low loader!
They were very prompt.

I've been through the same. AA hiked my price up, so first year I called them and they reduced the price. The second year they tried the same so I just cancelled and went to the RAC informing AA why I was cancelling. I used to be with Green Flag but their prices started to creep up when previously they used to be much cheaper than the AA and RAC. Also its a bit of a lottery depending on where you break down what local garage they send out. My sister found that to her cost when a "mechanic" from a garage acting on behalf of Green Flag ended up causing more problems than he solved. I could be wrong but I think AA/RAC mechanics are probably trained to a company standard. So I'll keep playing the big two off each other at renewal time.

I've just joined the RAC online for £119 for joint cover with roadside/recovery and free home start, it does say the usual price for this is £200 so next year I'll either cancel and take out a new policy online or go back o the AA for a while until they up the price. What you have to remember is for every one of us that quibles about the price, there's probably 99 other people that just pay up.

AA have been brilliant but it does get annoying having to negotiate with them every year. Sure some people just pay and don't ever argue though..
