My late mother bought a new Metro in 1989 and only sold it when she stopped driving in 2005. The longest I've owned a car was 13 years - I bought a five year old Maxi in 1976 and sold it in 1989 (and bought a Montego that turned out to be in worse condition). A few weeks after I sold the Maxi, the gearbox packed up. It had been jumping out of second since before I bought it!
A friend took over his father's 58/9 Minor after his father died and ran it until 1986 or so. I can't remember when his father died, but it was over thirty years ago!
I have owned VWs since the Montego hit a sandstone gatepost that jumped out in front of it (!) and was written off. The longest I've owned a VW was eight years - the first (Mk2 Gold diesel) was pretty reliable and I bought it with 97K on the clock. The cylinder head cracked a couple of months after I sold it!
I had a 96 Passat (1.9TD) after that - it was an ex-lease car with 73K on the clock. I had it for about nine years and sold it beacuse the injector pump was starting to go. The local garage bought it as it was otherwise immaculate (though had done over 200K)and found the timing had slipped. They sorted it and sold it on - and it went for scrap a couple of months later!
I need to keep the current 2008 Mk5 Bluemotion for at least ten years to get the money back for the engine I have just had to have fitted. One thing's pretty sure, the next car won't be a VW - the previous (Mk4) Golf had all sorts of silly problems and always needed something sorting - though I can't blame it for packing up - it hit a cobble, which smashed the stupid alloy sump, ruined the engine and it was a write off!
As I said to the lad that bought the Passat - I have never sold a good car!

Bought a C reg Scirocco in 1999 with the intention of it being a daily driver. Still have it today as my daily driver. I'm completely indifferent to modern cars and perceive them to be potentially unreliable so I'm unlikely to change anytime soon
Going to celebrate my 10th Anniversary with my Elise later this year.

Bought my 1.3 Mk2 Astra in September 1999 for £925. Although I rarely drive it, the missus drives that and her Nova daily in all weathers.
Here it is after a (largely waste of time and money) bare metal respray last year:

Engine/ box are original, 221k now, and it's kinda perverse seeing how long it'll last. It's been rallied, 1/4 miled (19.2 secs!) RRd (62BHP @ wheels IIRC) and been round Castle Combe.

Also featured in Practical Classics 200k club. Also was the wife's wedding car.

It's a member of the family.

I have a friend who purchased a late 1950's VW Beetle from new when serving with the US Airforce in Germany and still has the car today in Florida. I have an old Lexus LS 400 purchased in 1997 from new and just ticks along as a winter hack with 117,000 on the clock. One service a year, cleaned every couple of weeks and driven with care....no costs really and no depreciation now.
