BMW 1 series and alternatives.

The Mrs wants a new car. We spent a couple of hours yesterday visiting a few showrooms but didn't take any test drives, hopefuly will next weekend with a short list.
She started out wanting an A3, always fancied one. She wants something no bigger than a Golf, Astra, A3 etc but something comfortable for long journeys, with a well spec'd comfortable interior. We had went to loo at Volvos and decided to call in the BMW dealership. Personally never been a fan of the look of the BMW 1 series, but there was one in the show room, nice wheel, in a gun metal sort of grey that I thought looked pretty good, the Mrs agreed.
She was planning on going for second hand possibly new if the deal was right. The main reason the 1 series appeals though is there are some cracking lease deals around at the moment. 600 down and 205 a month inc VAT on a 125d in M sport trim on a 2 year lease with 10k milles pa. Even cheaper deals around on a 120d sport. The M Sport may have too harsh a ride for the motorway?
She's ruled out the Golf, I have a Octavia vRS on order, was going to have a look at the new Leon. If you can live/like the looks there are far better deals out there on the 1 series vs the A3.
Would like to hear from people who have had a similar situation and what you ended up going for-also what the 1 series is like to live with.

I have to say I quite like the A-class. The latest one is a great looking car, well equipped and has had some great reviews. My father has just picked up the new B-class, which is a fat A-class to be honest. He got the 1.8D Sport and it goes well, handles great and even for a mini MPV type of car its a great looking thing even in that form. The A-class would be a serious contender if I were in your shoes.
