Diesel Estate ~£4k?

So, thanks to some blind reversing woman, my daily snotter is likely to be written off, so it's replacement time.
In short, I need a diesel estate - up to £4k. I would prefer something a little bit interesting, but it does get used for travelling between 2 different offices, so needs to be frugal. Because it's not being used for the most fun driving, i'll give up on that side of things for comfort, MPG & cheap running costs.
In an ideal world, i'd like an auto, but i'd compromise on that if needs be. if it's got a towbar, even better, as it will save me the expense of getting one fitted.
The usual suspects seem to be stuff like a 320D, occasionally they pop up in sport form, with an auto box, some early A4 SLine's creep into that budget, or the late B5 Passat's.
Anything i'm missing? Anyone seen anything kicking around near the south coast? I don't really fancy driving to the other side of the country for such a car...

Thought about Saab's, not so sure about that. Definitely not brave enough for an Alfa..
Volvo V50? Seen a few sport models kicking around for that sort of money?
I've got a good VAG Indy up the road from me, which may be swaying my decision somewhat. Hardly exciting, I know, but they are generally reliable if looked after, plus they have a reasonable image if needed for work.

Saabs are the obvious one: 9-5 or 9-3. Plenty of autos around, as well.Alfa 156 Sportwagen if you're feeling brave. Skoda Octavia Estate (vRS maybe) if you're not?

t, I wouldn't recommend someone buy one of these. The next door neighbours, milk mans, daughter goes out with a bloke who drinks with another bloke who once spoke to someone who's sisters, boyfriends father once owned an Alfa had nothing but trouble with it. Nah, they're st, I wouldn't recommend someone buy one of these. The next door neighbours, milk mans, daughter goes out with a bloke who drinks with another bloke who once spoke to someone who's sisters, boyfriends father once owned an Alfa had nothing but trouble with it. From the outside, that Jag looks quite a nice choice, the inside however, looks like an old Fiat Punto centre console 
Struggling to look past £2-3k on a reasonable Passat at the moment. E46's seem a bit thin on the ground in the local area. They fit the bill with most of my wishlist covered, but i'm not driving all over the countryside looking for a new car.

Honda Accord 2.2 Tourer

Little update, kept my eyes on EBay last night for new listings, managed to jump on a 54 plate Passat 1.9tdi Highline, that's only done ~100k, with a full extensive history for £2k that was local. Silver with black leather, looks very tidy.
Well under budget, it sounds cheap for what it is so will have a good nose around it. Maybe I've got lucky and nabbed a bargain.

I'd guess the Passat might have slightly better soundproofing than the Octavia, I don't find it a problem but my Octavia is a bit nosier than some other cars. Not sure the vRS is available in automatic but the L&K certainly is.Mondeo's worth a look for a budget diesel estate.
