We've all seen them (sadly maybe even built one) at the side of roads. Complete with crosses, flowers, teddy bears and heartfelt messages of love. 
What does PH think of these shrines to lost family members?
Would you like one in the unfortunate event you're killed on our roads?
Personally I'd be horrified my family members were putting themselves in danger at the exact spot I was killed!
"Yeah, let's all stand at the side of an obvious dangerous road!"
Or does it serve as a reminder to slow down or not drink drive or take care whilst driving?

We have one at the end near us where we join the dual carriageway.

In France they put out black silhouettes of people.
Full size, men, women and children.
It's not a shrine afaik, but a warning to other drivers that it's a potentially dangerous stretch of road.
It's quite sombre to see so many of them on some stretches.
As for the shrines here.
I hate seeing the neglected - it's very sad.
Like people have stopped caring.

k up there?!"There is one near me which always struck me as the height of stupidity. A chap was run over crossing the road, his relatives are still maintaining the shrine today, including crossing the road to do so...

When I worked in Old Woking, the regular drive across from Mytchett to Pirbright over the ranges saw lots of shrines - usually surrounding a tree that has a piece of bark missing. Some came and went, others were maintained on a more permanent basis.
For me they served as a reminder of how fragile life is, and probably slowed me down a bit on a few occasions.
If I ever bite the bullet wrapped around a tree, and my family want to stick something there which in turn slows someone down and prevents another fatality, then I'm happy for them to do it.

Several on the A1307 from Cambridge to Haverhill. They are always meticulously maintained and have been there for a good 4 years.
I do often wonder if it is the local authority who maintain them with the family's permission. Especially seeing as the road is considered a 'High Risk' route with signs telling you how many casualties there were.
Not for me though. I would hope that if my family thought of remembering me that way they would soon realise that I would have thought it an especially tacky and careless tribute to my life.
One down the road from me was decorated for christmas with tinsel, christmas tree and presents. Poor person must be spinning in their grave!
