Just purchased my RFL on line which was £30 last year but is now only £20.

I've got a 1.6 Saxo that's £280. The car only cost £800.

Wikipedia says that VED raised £5.6bn in 2009, and the combination of VED and fuel duty raised £32bn in the same year.

So that's £26.4bn from fuel duty. In 2009, fuel duty was 56.2p/litre, which means about 470m litres of dutiable fuel must've been sold. So about 12p/litre to go on fuel duty to balance VED.

BUT... that ignores one detail. It'd massively increase the tax burden on heavy fuel users - and VED rises have explicitly "gone light" on HGVs over the last few budgets, because high fuel duties are already causing them to be uncompetitive.

Interesting, but aren't HGV's very expensive to tax (not looked TBH) Given VED is a green tax now by its bands ditching it altogether & taxing by fuel useage (rather than frigged CO2 figures) would make more sense? No VED and say 8p a litre on fuel......
