£11,000....Mazza or Porka
Discussion
So, you've got £11,000 burning a hole in you're pocket and you want a sports car. Can you tell me the pros and cons of the Porsche and Maserati below and which one you would choose? By the way, it's between these two and no others!

So long as you can back up either with enough disposable income to suit the running costs of these cars, either would be fine. I'd personally go for the Maserati. I was never a massive 996 fan, although I respect them as good cars.
Both have potential for bills, but that goes with the territory of buying fully-depreciated £70k sportscars. If you're expecting to run them on a Mondeo budget you might be lucky, but you'll probably get "stung" if you keep it a few years. Everyone knows someone who just had to put in fuel and drive it, in the same way that everyone knows someone who's gearbox exploded or the engine holed its block or whatever.
If you expect to spend a couple of grand a year on top of fuel, tax and insurance then you'll be happy with either.

That's the thing....the heart says Maserati the head says Porsche or am I wrong. Will the Porsche be less to run?
Both will cost money, though 996 servicing is probably cheaper. I would imagine there are more Porsche independent specialists compared with those who specialise Maserati (purely by dint of the number of Porsches on the road vs Maseratis). Even Porsche themselves now do lower priced servicing for 986s/996.The Porsche is a car you can (and many do) use every day. Not so sure about the Italian, but I guess it trumps on being a bit more 'special'. That said, I would guess the 996 is more competent a car - but it entirely depends on what you are going to use it for!
At this price/age, both could be fine and both could bork you rather painfully.
As ever with running older sports cars I think it's down to how far you wade in vs your personal finances.
An £11k yester-year exotica vs a budget to run a new £25k BMW 3 series would work in my book. After 3 years the new car has cost you in depreciation what the old car cost to buy. So you have money to throw at it over 3 years and can bail if you need. Of course, if the old car treats you kindly for 3 years, your 'up' on the gamble and get to the point 'it owes you nothing'.
An £11k yester-year exotica vs a budget to run a £12k used Mondeo has risk written all over it as quite frankly it can bite you in the ass harder than your budget can handle.
I work on the basis with older cars that they are a gamble and that I need to be able to throw them away (as much as it would piss me right off) and have the money to start again if I had to.
Doesn't really answer your question 'Mazza or Porka', but using my rationale would allow me to just go with the one I really wanted.

Having driven both I can say they are very different , the porsche will be far more forgiving when you are pushing on, it gave me confidence to push harder. I always felt the maserati was waiting to stab me in the back
For me it would come down the test drive, both will cost about the same to run, better mpg from 996 but you don't buy thee for mpg. Both will sit 4 on short pub lunch drives and look great pulling up in.
£11K get you a lot of car these days

If I *had* to choose between those two, I'd go for the Maserati.
If it's purely for high days and holidays, the Maserati will be more of an event. I'm actually a fan of the 996, but that particular one does nothing for me at all.
(ETA: funny how bonefish has just said the opposite - goes to show just how much of a personal thing these questions are)
As said above, unless you've got a decent slush fund you can ringfence, I'd probably steer clear of either tbh, and go for something a little more sensible.

Weekends and sunny evenings only, 3000 miles a year. His 3200 has a special exhaust, and is an event. Four adults can fit. Great for wafting, it's a heavy thing and the standard brakes are nowhere near as good as a 996 - on a track day he had to retire, brakes a-smouldering, whilst the 911s lapped it up.
So for your purposes, the Maserati.
Make sure it has had the correct grade of engine oil - 10W60 IIRC - which if not used throughout it's life can lead to problems later on.
My friends car also occasionally throws electrical tantrums. It goes through a check sequence, and if IT decides all is OK, then it will start. It will occasionally decide that all is not well, and will tell you it won't be starting today.
Nah.... not-a-today, I no start.
