GTR or C63?

Hi guys,

Right, im here because I need some car advice.

Im in the process of looking for a new car. I am 22, and have got insurance quotes for the cars in question. Im a real car geek, so please feel free to go into great amounts of detail with me!

I currently drive a Audi TT S Line and was was originally looking at a 2012 Nissan GTR. I went to see one at the showroom, and if Im honest, the salesman scared me off. He said the running costs were astronomical, 4 new discs and pads, £4500... 4 new tyres, £2500 etc. He also told me I was looking at a service every 5000miles (which for me is every 2 and a half months) and that was going to cost £1000. He basically told me not to bother unless I wanted to spend thousands on maintenance and servicing.

So, I started to look at the other car I had in mind, and started to look at the C63 Coupe. I do approx 350 - 400 miles per week. My current car does approx 24 - 25mpg, what sort of drop am I likely to see in mpg? What are the running costs like for the C63 in comparison?

Basically, all suggestions welcome. I've also been opening up to the RS5, TTRS, and the E92 M3.

Just hoping to get some sort of help or advice from whoever is in the know!

I suspect the c63 will be much more suitable for your mileage, as has already been pointed out to you the GTR costs a bomb to run.

I'm 22 and I winced at the £540 for a cam-belt change in my Clio and £480 for four tyres..

Can't imagine having a car that fast, this young. I'd definitely drive too fast for my ability.

Of the 2 I'd go C63, running costs or otherwise. Presumably more comfortable, sounds like thunder, much cooler.

Prepare for a deluge of questions about what you do for a living, and lots of demands of custard with your pay slip and bank account and pictures of your car with you in it with the engine at 3,764rpm and a bowl of tepid custard on the dash with a skin starting to form so that the important fact of how you may have more money than the poster can be established.

Oh and 'school holidays' will be mentioned too.

AMG for noise and sideways fun GTR if you want to be the biggest fish in the pond on trackdays (just hope there are no radicals)

however you will pay a substantial owners tax on any AMG/M/RS model that you buy, servicing and parts are 2-3 times more than stock models, there just not GTR levels of cost, and these cars eat brakes and tyres if used as intended (especially rear tyres on the AMG)

i knocked my first set of front discs and pads out in 10k miles

RS5/M3/C63 all will cost around 7-8k in fuel with your mileage plus 2k in servicing and tyres, I do a similar mileage to you in an e92 M3, so budget on 10k per year to run any of them for year.

The GTR as you say will cost more to service etc...

Before you talk yourself out of a GT-R take a look at the forums on GTROC. Some great real world info there. For my part I've had mine for about a year. I use it as a daily (added around 10k miles) and so far just a set of tyres (which I knew would be needed when I bought the car) at £1190 (Michelin Pilot Supersports - a pretty good all round tyre)and 2 services through Lichfield at a little over and a little under £300 each. Fuel economy averaging around 23mpg (most of my driving is gentle A road stuff)so not so bad that I think too much about it. I guess the clue is in the name but it's an excellent GT car - really good boot space, visibility, safe over-taking power etc but does the slow stuff really well too. It's a nice place to be. A touch wide and you do sometimes feel the weight but ride quality is much better than expected and fun to sometimes shock a passenger with its pace (when safe and legal of course).

Best of luck with your decision and take your time - looking for the right car is a big part of the fun!

When it comes to the GTR, I work with a few driving experience/track day companies, all of which run them. One is not far away from having seen 90k miles of pretty much all hard track work, aside from routine servicing and a couple more oil changes than a regular road car they've all been examples of reliability!

Forget what the Nissan salesman tells you. I was almost scared off by the running costs stories but have owned a GTR for nearly two yrs now and they are nowhere near as expensive to run as some make out. You can at least half the cost of everything that nissan will charge you if you use a good specialist.Also nissans service schedule for the MY 2011 cars onwards was every 9000 miles or once a year so it shows how useless the salesman was.

Ive not owned a C63 but have been in one and im guessing tjat fir someone of your age you would much prefer a GTR.

If this is genuine then surely the answer depends on how your mileage is split...

If its commuting plus weekend driving why not purchase a Diesel or economical petrol of some sort I.e a 320-330, etc for £6-£8k and then buy a GTR.

Putting 15-20k miles on a GTR is surely going to cost a fortune and cause it to depreciate fairly heavily.... I'd expect similar of the AMG. If it's just for commuting on a motorway is it really worth the extra outlay... Just my thoughts.

Chris you're quite young yourself aren't you? Why are you in such disbelief that someone of similar age can have done as well/better than you?

C63 for me I think, though either of these cars will depreciate heavily if you pile the miles on it, and if my annual mileage was mainly motorway I wouldn't have either of these cars, as they'll just cost a bomb to run without the benefit of getting to stretch their legs. Then I'd have a cheap diesel and something for fun for the weekends, when I could probably use something with a 6.2L V8.

Partial nonsense about the running costs. A set of tyres from Nissan costs £1700, pretty much everybody with a GTR puts Michelin Pilot Sport 2's on which cost £1000 a set. You can destroy them in 6,000 with some spirited driving. Used as a daily they will last 12,000+ easily.

Servicing isn't that much, although a major service will set you back £800. The engines carry a hell of a lot of oil IIRC. New disks and pads don't cost £4500 neither, they are steep though. Again down to use.

A C63 does seem like it would be more suited to your needs, especially if you're covering lots of miles. I know they lack performance in comparison, but that soundtrack

I'm 27, I could have a lambo on finance and live at home, but instead I chuck silly money at rent and boozing.. and drive a z4, soon to be joined by a RRS

if you can afford a c63 at 22 fair play to you!

A friend of mine pays £1100 to insure his GTR, with only 1yrs NCB and a fault claim against him He's also 22.

I used an M3 for a year for work miles (and weekend family runs). Cheap to run in my opinion and reasonable MPG.

You need to fix the exhaust note with the backbox hack or an aftermarket exhaust.
