Lambda: Service item?

I recently noticed that there is a 100,000 mile replacement interval for the lambda sensor on my old E34 BMW. It has done 130,000 miles now and I have no evidence of the sensor ever having been replaced or disturbed.

I thought lambda sensors were one of those things you replace when they fail- is it worthwhile replacing a 130k mile lambda sensor and if so, why?

They can get old and slow to react, but no urgent need to change one.

On pre-Euro 4 cars (i.e. single lambda at the cat rather than a pre and post-cat lambda) you'll likely notice with poor emissions results at MOT time first.
