Tyres for SUVs/CUVs

I've taken the time to do a search but found nothing that answers what I hope is a simple question.

Are there really SUV specific tyres? Surely any tyre that meets the size and loading requirements of the vehicle would be fine for any vehicle?

The reason I ask is that a quick search 'by vehicle' on numerous tyre suppliers and manufacturers websites for my Volvo XC60 (for example) shows only SUV style treads and tyres. But searching by size, load and speed rating gives lots more choices (and lower priced options). I can see why your average SUV driver might want some more aggressive tread for their gravel driveway (!) but surely a tyre with great wet/dry on-road traction and good wear rating would suit any vehicle so long as it meets the loading requirement. Plus our XC60 is based on the S60 platform anyway - it's not like it's an F150.

As long as the size, speed and load rating are correct, you're fine.

SUV's should have chunky off road tyres or quit the high ride.. I fitted proper m+s michelins to mine and it's great!

best to search by tyre size. also try a couple of different online places and take your pick. i think some manufacturers alter construction of the sidewalls to suit the heavier weight of suv's

I've got a set of full mountain/snowflake marked winter tyres for the proper winter (I live in Nova Scotia Canada afterall!). The M&S tyres I had previously on my old LR Discovery did f-all in the ice so unless you're off-roading I can't see the M&S rating being that useful. Wet/Dry road traction at >+7°C appears to be best with Summer tyres in general from what I've read.

But it looks like so long as the load rating covers the weight of the vehicle (plus any additional passenger/cargo/roof/tow tounge load) then I'll be good.
