which economical auto for 4k?

Been toying with the idea of getting an auto for a which. As my commute us mainly made up of sitting in start stop traffic. Ideally 5 Door and as economical as pos. Not bothered about performance as probably average 5mph.
The above photo of an MRI of my fractured left talus has suddenly made it seem an even better idea. Any thoughts or advise gratefully received. As never owned one before.

Sorry Tickious,don't know anything about those 2,need to be careful about the type of auto box,i only speak from experience with the note,nice smooth gear change.

I have a Colt diesel, it's reliable and economical but the gearbox is dreadful!

Can you just press go n stop without using a paddle?
Is it a merc engine in that, so = expensive repairs?

Remember quite a few autos have nasty high road tax.
My 1.6 auto Pug 307 was quicker than my Zafira 1.6 manual and Mondeo 2.0 auto.
