Best DERV what car when economy doesn't matter?

Hi all

I've recently had an interview for a new job which it looks likely in going to be offered. The job comes with a car allowance like my current role, but unlike it there is a fuel card included! I assume there is a tax break or the company is trying to be green or something as they insist on a diesel!! So naturally I'm going to break the mould and burn some diesel.

Unfortunately there are also a number of rules attached to the allowance:-

• 5 years old max (which means I need to buy a 2-3 year old car and run it to 5)
• 4 seats (and doors)
• must be diesel to qualify for fuel card

My requirements

• motorway wafter
• toys, toys and more toys
• auto

To a certain extent the budget isn't fixed. I have around £600pcm to play with for finance and ideally this would include tax/ maintenance, insurance I pay separately. So let's go as far as we can I guess!

So, who does the BEST diesel, without necessarily being frugal?

So far my thoughts:-

5/7 30d
E/S class (don't like these really)
Something with the JLR *DV8?? Range rover, disco XF

What else??

The audi 3.0tdi is quite good too, I think.

A8 4.2 tdi? I'm sure that they did a 6 litre tdi in the Q7 too. (maybe not so much fun)

From your list I'd be keen on either the XF or a 530d with smaller wheels.

BMW *35d / JLR V6 / V8 or Audi V6d are all great units. Pick whatever size body skin fits you best with one of these.

I know you already mentioned the 5/7 series but don't forget the 640d gran coupe. A colleague recently bought a 2010 A8 4.3 tdi and it's a lovely car which is full of toys and the miles fly by.

You're going to have a great time test driving some luxo barges!

Seat Ibiza TDi sport, when abused, as it can be with a remap, can get low teens. It does take effort though.

I expect reasonable economy will matter to the bean counters. Why not just buy a smart economical car as intended by the rules of your new job ?

Ok, so a 640 or Panemera will be a better drive, but you have to say, this looks sensational (the car guys, the car....)

My thoughts exactly. When you have a few years in then you can stick two fingers up at the (spirit of the)company rules.
