Car recommendations

Hello,
Just looking for a wee bit of advice. The missus is on mat leave and she goes back in a couple of months. I decided that when the little one was born it made financial sense to only keep the one car (sold a Bugeye Impreza and kept the 57 plate ceed).
Now I have started to think about what car to buy, probably have a few months before I have to get serious.
Looking to spend no more than about 5k. We have three girls (9, 3 and 4months) so will need space in the back.
The normal weekly driving that I would do is:
Couple of miles drop of to nursery school
Between 10 and 30 miles with some motorway but a fair amount of town driving.
Some running about at the weekends, no more than 50 miles a weekend
One or two longer trips of a few hundred miles for holidays
Really looking for car recommendations. Ive had a whole host of cars in the past from BMW 320d, RX8, Impreza WRX and others. I was looking at the new Kia Rio but they are not in budget yet. I have also been thinking about getting a super cheap car and hoping that it lasts but am really going round in circles.
Would like something economical (really wish Id never traded my 320d in) but needs to be big enough and interesting enough so am looking for ideas.
I have some concerns about older cars (reliability) especially when spending decent money on them and although I think a diesel would be more economical Ive heard some horror stories about the DPF mucking the engine up if there are a lot of shorter journies.
All ideas/suggestions are most welcome
