Start at about 10years but is company dependant
Some require it to be a secondary vehicle also

Standards are anything over 25 years old, Anything that there's less than 2k of that, that was made in small quantities that is considered cherished more than 15 years old, any Ferrari, etc thats more than 10 years old, anything British, hand made and large of engine almost irespective of age.

There is a subjective element to it, but even Fiat Coupes and Ford Pumas qualify with some providers.

Timely post as the time has come to renew the 964 insurance. Last year a 'classic' policy underwritten by Aviva came in at c£500 with a complimentary 25% NCB to presumably transfer to a mainstream policy on renewal. As we know classic polices do not accrue NCB.

This year renewal with the same company comes in at £470 giving me unlimited track days, 3k miles and EU cover.

I was about to hit the button when I thought I'd try out of interest to see what these mainstream comparison sites would throw out - Confused.com.

As an experiment I quoted for my main car with full protected NCB applied. This returned a price of £150 ! As the 964 is not my 'main' car I cant apply the max NCB to it so went in with another quote with 1yr (25%) applied. This time it came back with an annual policy of £262 for SDP Company called PerformanceDirect.co.uk and underwritten by Highways (Liverpool Victoria)with a £550 combined excess, 3k miles and 90 day EU cover.

10 yrs is very rare,vast majority are 25yrs.Most require it as 2nd car/resricted miles/driver over 25.

Might be wrong, but don't some insurers work on how long a particular model has been out of production?

I insured an E32 740i as a classic in 2009, at this point the E32 had been out of production for 15 years, so although not a particularly old or rare car it still qualified.

Although I think the criteria vary wildly from insurer to insurer!

Try Heritage/Norton classic car insurance (Google is your friend), always competitive, no need for no claims proof for cars used as weekend toys and under 3k ish miles PA, free agreed value, been with them for years, currently paying £88 per year for my Sierra XR4i.

Will they treat a car as classic over 10 years old or does it have to be 25 years old ?

They did anything over 10 years last time I tried and were always up for a bit of negotiation on prices. One of my mates has a few cars with them and hes the tightest bloke I know, so they're definitely cheap biggrin

Think it depends on Make and Model, the Sierra is a 1983 but i was classic insuring it from 2002/3 so it was less than 20yrs old then.
Contact them or do a quote on line, really nice easy people to deal with.

Very much depends on car, being a second vehicle and number of miles driven. Also always heard good things about heritage classic insurance.

Well not in my experience, your on-line application might have flagged something up presumingly.
