Drove along the M25 today from the M26 through the roadworks - 50mph and SPECS enforced.

Because of the traffic levels I couldn't get into Lane 2 or 3 to overtake a dozen cars in Lane 2 who were travelling at 45-47mph.

So I slowly undertook at 50mph (48mph on my GPS).

So tell me I'm going to hell etc.

Nothing wrong with under-taking in "queues of slow-moving traffic", which I think is a reasonably description of cars doing 45mph on the motorway.

It's not poor lane discipline. The recommendation in such situations is to avoid changing lanes.

From what I gather from the OPs post, a line of cars were travelling in L2 when they should have been in L1?

Why should they have been in lane-1? When you enter specs controlled road works regions, there is almost always a sign saying "stay in lane". That means you should stay in lane rather than keeping to the left most lane available

In SPECS roadworks areas I still move over as a courtesy to other drivers. Some vehicles can't use L3 which is often narrower.

Ok, I see where you're coming from I'm from NI, we only have one SPECS in the whole country (AFAIK?).

I'm still on the OPs side though, use the whole road, that's what it was built for.

I rarely see stay in lane signs, I'm almost completely certain that there aren't any on the M25 sections. Drives me potty people just sitting in their lane when they should move left, lorries obviously can't go in lane 3 so I end up having to do dubious moves so that I don't have to travel 10 miles at 45mph.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a SPECs controlled road-work region without them.

Don't think that there's signs on either the Surrey or Hertfordshire sections but I go through them so often I don't really look for signs anymore, don't remember them being on the M1 Luton stretch years ago either. Maybe it's a London thing.

Are you talking about permanent SPECS zones, or road works? The OP is talking about the latter, I think.

The permanent zones do not have such signs and of course you have to keep left.

From what I can remember I don't recall seeing any Stay in Lane signs for those roadworks (and I normally remember the make, model and registration of the last 20-30 cars that drove past me).
