The £10k 911 as a daily....

I have done a couple of what car type threads as I am genuinely undecided as to what to do.

I am doing a 4 mile each way commute and other than that it is driving for the sheer hell of it.

I originally started down the circa £10k E65 750 or another W215 CL, a 55K or 600 without the tuning route this time, or an Audi A8 4.2 or a W12 if I can find one! I keep coming back to that area as it is arguably the sensible choice.

A TVR Chimera is a possibility after the last thread I did and I have had a gander around and one option that strikes me in a similar vein is a 911 for around the £10k mark. I had a 993 Turbo many moons ago and did love it but it was a second car but always struck me as very usable.

So is a £10k 911 a reasonable prospect?

For £10k I presume you mean a 3.4 996 as any other generation 911 at that price is likely to need a fair bit of work to be up to use as a daily driver.
I have used a 3.6 996 as my daily driver for over 3 years and it has never failed to bring a smile to my face.

Yep I am looking at circa 2000 996 3.4, with around 80k-90k on. I would prefer a manual box and there are a few cabrio's and coupes about it seems.

As far as i am aware, a £10k 911 could quickly turn into a £5k bill.

There may be a potential 'Bork' factor to it but why not, if we all worried about the 'what if's' we'd all be in new Kia's, but based on the small commute I'd go for a £9,500 911 and a push bike. 😀

Strange thing to say - any car could.

There are many 996 for sale at that sort of level, and most will be fine. I know two such owners who sold at that sort of level, and both cars had been in good condition with no major faults during their ownership.

To the OP - good choice, but my advice would be to have a thorough engine inspection by someone who really knows their stuff.

I am of that opinion in many ways raceboy..

Without sounding like a total twunt I am not going to skimp and I am not afraid of the occasional reasonable "william". My £10k is not based on having a finite limit I am just being tight and not wanting to shell out any cash really as I have a PX which I will get around £8k for and putting another £2k into something is not very painful and I would like to put it into something at around that figure which will not loose masses, I can swap and change about if I like and will be vaguely interesting. Honestly I am a realist and I would not be buying a 15 year old sports/GT car which was £50k plus expecting it to be a new car!

However I don't want to buy something that will need £5k a year just to keep it roadworthy!

Hell I have a 25 year old XJ-S in the garage for high days and when I fancy giving the BP share price a boost!

Do I fk. I lost all confidence in it after that.

It was all sorted though after the rebuild, so the new owner had none of the concerns that there was an impending doom coming.

I don't mind talking figures either; I bought it for £9.4k and sold it for £12.5k so I was able to recoup my expense as well as using the fact it had a rebuild as a selling tool.

Would I do it again? No. Would I recommend a £10k 996 to anyone? No. Would I recommend a £12.5k+ 996 that's had a rebuild? Yes.

I don't mean to piss on your idea, but I'd strongly recommend upping your budget if you can or not bothering with one at all.

If you don't need rear seat space, £10k buys you more Boxster than 911.

Not need... but it is preferable to have something vaguely practical with having Heppers Jnr.

However a Boxster is a more honest comparison to a Chimera I guess.

I've had my eye on this for a while, in fact I didn't go for it last summer because the garage had shut early on a Thursday. It looked in great nick though. Only downside is the road tax however insurance would only be circa €700 a year

Between me and the Mrs we have a Chimaera and a Boxster, I was quite impressed with the Porsche and although I haven't done that many miles in it there is no comparison to the TVR, I did use the TVR as a daily some years ago and even then it somehow just feels more 'special', the Mrs uses the Boxster as a daily and it rarely misses a beat.
All boils down to what your after really but a 4 mile commute in a TVR might get a little of a pain sometimes where as the Porsche is much more of a useable 'normal' car.
