Looking to get rid of the Zed as I fancy a change - looking at used prices.
- More than 2 seats isn't a necessity
- Not that fussed on fuel economy - its replacing a very thirsty Nissan and I do less than 10,000 a year
- RWD pretty much a given
- 300ish+ BHP (I only have room for 1 car - this is a weekend toy too)
Leaning towards a Cayman S - have explored 911's - but for that price I imagine you will be taking on a bigger risk of issues than a newish Cayman (although I gather they are not without their problems) - From what I can tell, getting one from Porsche with their cast iron warranty is worth it.
GT86/BRZ - too slow - not driven one, but the lack of power worries me.
370Z - I love the 350, but don't fancy another GT heavyweight
TT - Would maybe think about the S, but having driven my old mans 3.2, it felt like a heavy GT (a la the 350Z) plus, its not really silly enough
M3,RS4,C63 - will be the replacement for the replacement when I need to shoehorn kids in
Monaro - too daft
Am I missing anything? The Cayman seems like the perfect choice and is civilised enough to live with, while being able to drive like a nutter at the weekends with. Any obvious choices I'm missing?

I see you've already mentioned it, and it's definitely the default response for me on basically everything, I can't think of a situation it wouldn't suit. Get the best M3 you can for the money. Maybe a convertible if that tickles your fancy? If you like it, kids may demand a saloon, or even then, the best M5 you can buy...
At that pricepoint, it is basically a Porsche Cayman S vs. Porsche Boxster S vs. BMW M3 / M5 / M6 vs. BMW Z4M vs. Audi TTS vs. Audi S3 vs. Mercedes SLK AMG vs. Subaru Impreza Cosworth.
The Porsche Cayman S is probably the best overall bet for usability, reliability(ish), speed(ish) and badge cachet.

To my mind, it's hard to beat the Cayman (or Boxster) S with those requirements.
I suppose it might be worth considering a supercharged Elise/Exige - obviously they aren't 300bhp, but the lack of weight gives them performance at least on a par with things like the Cayman S and the rest of the driving experience is in a different league, IMO. Whether they're viable daily drivers is a matter of personal taste and circumstances, though.
