Good car for sitting in traffic...

Start a new job Monday, I live in East London just next to the A13 and i need to get to Hayes everyday, this will include a trip round the north circ to Hayes or i can drive to Elephant and Castle, on to Vauxhall, then past earls court and on to the A4/M4. Either way i will be stuck in traffic for long periods.
Currently run a B5 S4 but anticipate moving it on after nearly 5 years and getting a diesel or good MPG petrol. Don't want to spend more than 10K and open to ideas on 4x4 etc...has got to be comfy though and have 30-35mpg in slow traffic..

That sounds perfect environment for a hybrid like a Prius. It's auto, petrol, spacious and generally reliable.
You mentioned 4x4 so there's always the option of a Lexus RS400h hybrid, which are starting to creep under 10k.
Of course, there's no real driving fun to be had from either of those, but for the journey you will be doing, it's appropriate.

A diesel is going to be a poor choice for city traffic.
Lots of emmissions related parts to get clogged up.
Although a MMGW sceptic, it doesnt stop me from believing that soot is harmful for health.
Diesels are much more sooty than petrols, and all that soot will be going into the city air.
If anything, the low mileage of a city commute would make a large petrol engine easily justifiable for me

I shiver when i hear that word 'hybrid' but i may have to join the club...urgh
At the same time to sell my current car would be gut wrenching, bought new turbos, flywheel, clutch and a assortment of pipes plus loads of other stuff in last two years, its still got another 60-70 easy left on it (135k at present). The deals on the new mini 1.2 turbo look pretty good too, 62mpg and can be mapped when one is available.....???

I have 8.30am start time which somewhat throws a spanner in the works, if only had that extra 30mins. I've always commuted on public transport so this will be a first. Nearest station to work is Hayes and Harlington and will need to get connecting trains out of Paddington on a line that is notoriously unreliable. Would have to leave at 6.30am, car about 7.15am

Unfortunately getting the bus down Jamaica road everyday for two years put me off riding bikes anywhere near a city, saw two people get squished plus walked past a fatality near Tower Bridge when someone got hit by a skip lorry, that one is out i'm afraid.I'm picking up a project in Hayes soon, but will be travelling the only sane way - by bike.

Go for a Bargey old Shed like the A8 that I run.
You can pick them up for £1k and get auto, leather, heated seats, air-con and a standard Bose sound system.
Not 30mpg round town but the petrol doesn't matter at shed money and neither will you be worried about cutting up buses and white van man.
They are lovely old cars to sit in traffic.

Nextdoor neighbour just got rid of two 1999 S8's, they might have fitted the bill. See what you mean about the shed idea, the Lexus hybrid isn't a bad shout either. What's the tube connection like for your journey?
The old Audi sheds with leather seats are right up my street, maybe have a look at a few S8's barges.
