Safest way to leave a dopsit on a car?

I'm traveling to Norwich over the weekend to look at a car advertised by a private seller.

If all goes according to plan I'd like to leave a deposit for him to hold the car for 8 weeks.

Is there any kind of official paper work, or similar, that I can get his and my signature on, in case something were to happen to the car in question and I need the deposit back?

Any hints tips and ideas? Much appreciated!

I don't think I'd hang on to a car I was selling for 8 weeks, deposit or not.

I believe it's the owners 2/3rd car, it's just sitting around at the moment so the extra time shouldn't be an issue.

It'll be 4 weeks most likely but 8 at the absolute latest.

Dopsits are extremely aggressive, and if left on car may at the very least scratch it, and at worst eat through the metal. Their claws are also very sharp.

What colour dopsit is it? If it's purple - BE VERY AFRAID

All you need to do is set out on a piece of paper (2 copies),

• The date
• Names and addresses

Then

• Mr X
• has agreed to buy xyz car registration number KK77KKK
• from Mr Y
• for £?,000
• and paid a deposit of £?00
• which Mr Y acknowledges having received.
• Balance to be paid and car handed over to Mr X by (whatever date you agree)
• Balance to be paid by cash/bank transfer (whatever you agree) upon delivery.
• Both sign both copies and then keep one each.

Job done.

Seriously then, I don't think anything you write makes a jot of difference. Make the deposit small enough so that you don't care if you lose it. If your circumstances change, and he keeps your deposit, irrespective of any 'agreement' - what are you going to do? Sue? Nah.

£150 would be what I would offer as a deposit.

Depends on the value of the sale. I've in a similar position from a seller viewpoint, we agreed 20% deposit. However- imho it's all about trust. Have you been open and honest with the other guy, has he been open and honest with you...

Heels on the bumper, hand arse over bonnet, hopefully it's not been waxed recently so it won't slide down the bonnet onto you lower leg!

20% value and some red tape with a signature on sounds like a sensible idea.

It could be, but it would have to be a fair bit more to keep the car insured, taxed, garaged and all the other stuff you need for the next 2 months, then you turn up and say actually I have found one cheaper so can we talk about the price?

The paper work you put together will me stuff all in the grand scheme of things.

do it in a bag at home, then tip it out the bag as your walk past under the cover of darkness

much quicker than getting on top of the car on the street

8 weeks is a long time to hold a car for.
