Windscreen Chip - How Serious?

Got my first ever nasty windscreen chip today, in the m-lite. I assume there are MOT rules as to a failure (irrelevant as the car is just over a year old). It is not in my direct vision, as the driver.

The chip is very noticeable being approximately1.5cm * 1.5cm. You can feel it from the outside, but not the inside.

Looking from the inside of the car (RHD) it is approximately 6-8in left of centre, and just under halfway up the screen.


I've no idea how the integrity of a screen is affected by such a chip! I'm guessing modern screens can suffer several such hits? Or is it safer to get the screen replaced fairly soon?

Will it be covered by my car insurance or do insurers have more specific criteria for when a screen can be replaced?

I think the word in the MOT manual is something like 'in the sweep of the windscreen wipers'. I use that at work anyway. Still, a couple of £££ now as a prevention is better than replacing your screen at, potentially, far greater cost.

Measure it. You get up to 40mm outside of zone a (that's the area in front of the driver) and 15mm inside zone a.

All within swept area of course
