What car (sorry) - Carrying model aircraft! - Octavia VRS?

Sorry for another what car thread, but my dad has some very specific requirements.

He's replacing a Mazda 6, looking to buy new, cash.

Requirements are:
- New
- Petrol
- Preferably Manual
- About £25k
- It has to be big enough to carry model aircraft and golf clubs (not at the same time)
- It can't be deathly slow
- Doesn't want an estate

He's looked at the 3 Series (too expensive, boot too small), Audi A4 (boot too small, but good discount at the moment), doesn't like Mercs, Accord is too expensive, ruled out another Mazda.

This leaves the Skoda Octavia VRS, he's driven one, likes it, boot is big enough, he'll get an ok value in PX for his 6, the only thing stopping him at the moment is the dealer is refusing to budge on price, and keeps trying to get him in an Elegance.

Have we missed anything? I've tried to talk him into a second hand Jag or something, but he wants new. And petrol (good man)

Since the Octavia has just been replaced, is it worth hunting down a mk2 VRS? You might find pretty substantial reductions.

Not a bad idea! I didn't realise the new Octavia was /that/ new, when was it face lifted?

The last facelift was the mk2 about 6 years ago, I think. You wont find a pre-facelift car new.

ETA: Ah I've just realised what you meant. the mk3 VRS came out in November or December last year, I think.

Your dad should consider buying the car on finance then paying it off after a month.

They can't build the VRS quick enough and there is a 20+ week lead time now. They have also stopped the 0% finance and free servicing on the VRS model so I can't see any reason why they would need to offer a discount.

I believe so - isn't there a 28 "change your mind" clause in standard finance terms, giving you 28 days to phone up and pay it off in full. Something along those lines anyway.

When we bought my wife's Up from VW the salesman told us that only VW Finance customers would get the free servicing, tax and insurance offer they were running, but that several of his customers had taken the finance then paid it off after a couple of days.

No brainer really
