quick question on selling a car with a private plate

Hi
I have 2 people coming to view my car and woud like it sold straight away.
it currently has a personal plate on.

I was considering the following 2 options.

option 1- sell the car and ask buyer for additional £300 and offer to return this once I receive the retention certificate. Obviously I will pay the 105 retention fee.

Option 2- sell the car and state in the receipt that the reg is not included and that it is valued at £500. And if the buyer doesnt retain the reg as promised I will go through a smal claims court to recover the costa of the plate.

I know if left it too late to retain the playte myself
Is there any other option?

Once you sell the car and hand over reg docs etc the plate is his.

The only way to guarantee you keep the number is to put it on retention before you sell.

The last time I did this it happened very quickly - within a week if I recall correctly

Easiest way is to put the new owner on the V5C logbook as the new keeper, and on the V317 section 1 as the registered keeper, with you as the grantee of the reg in section 4 (top left page 2) of the V317, then post it whilst the new owner watches, that way the retention comes back to you, the replacement tax disk and MOT come back to the new owner and then the replacement logbook in his name.

I do 6 or 7 of these a month in that way, works well.

No because with DVLA backlogs (they're taking an age at the moment) you might be stuck unable to sell the car for weeks as lots of buyers (wrongly) associate the presence of the logbook with having a legal title to the car. With my way the new owner gets to see the logbook, check it, then watch it get posted knowing that the new one will come back to him in the age related reg.

If you transfer the plate before you advertise the car then there are no issues of the V5 not being present. This is how I do it every time, it's just part of prepping the car for sale.

I would walk from a sale of a car that the owner wanted to mess about holding extra money against me or making me transfer the plate for them. There would be additional insurance costs for admin charges for changing plates over too.
