Help - need to convince the wife on a new car for her

Been thinking hard about changing the wife's car for some time now
Budget £6k
I'm pushing for a used Eclass S211 320CDI (Estate) she is saying 7 seat Touran Sport 2.0 TDI
She thinks the Merc is too big possibly and not as good as the Touran, I'd assume her reasoning for this is a friend of hers had one and took her in it with her two kids many times and it did everything they needed therefore it should be fine.
Am I wrong in pushing for the better car here Merc (need to get her a test drive - but used ones at this or lower price point are not local - whereas she has spotted one local in a colour she likes....).

She is keen so am I on the S Max but at £6k they are not looking good you need £10k really for the spec we need and when doing 3k a year it doesn't make financial sense (maybe the next one?)

Let her have what she wants.
My Mrs despite being very comfortably off , own business , lovely house (we don't live together) insists on driving a battered 51 plate Golf GTI even though she could easily afford something much, much better. I've given up trying to convince her to buy anything. Lol

Push as far as getting her to have a serious look at one of the E-classes, and preferably a drive in one, but no further. If she likes it, great. But if she still thinks the Touran will be better because she prefers it, then leave her to it.
I've had this kind of situation and it's evenly split whether someone will suddenly "see the light" and realise they can have something five classes above what they expected, and those who don't care about the things that we value as making a car better and simply want what they originally saw themselves in.
If it's only financial worries "a big Mercedes must be so much more expensive to run than a good little VW" then you can soon put those to rest. But don't discount the possibility that she just likes the Touran better, if that's the case, then let her have one!

Actually looking on auto trader it could pick a Touran up local for £3.1k which has 160k miles rather than £6k which seems to buy half the milage. As for diesel v petrol from what I can see there are not many petrols for sale in the first place /possibly down to such a smaller % sold in the first place.
I'd happily have either - she currently runs a Leon Cupra 1.8T

Putting the search onto nationwide (but but keeping the sport spec) there are 268 diesels for sale and 12 petrols of those 12 and only 5 within budget and then only 3 being 7 seat options. Closest is 70 miles away to view - it could be great but that's a long way to go and its the normally aspired 2ltr petrol FSI So given the above diesel makes more sense there is simply much more choice.

FWIW I bought a 2005 Touran 2.0tdi 140 Sport for my wife.
It had a full VWSH, 12 months ticket and is a good unabused example. I wouldn't buy another. It's been plagued with wheel alignment problems, eating the edges of tyres, front and rear, for fun! I've lost count of the bushes and 4 wheel alignments I've had done. Research of relevant forums shows it to be a common issue.
Also suffers a hot start issue which although it starts, it kind of thumps into life. Allegedly it's a software issue that VW have denied all knowledge of.
That said, it's an effective tool, comfy with an acceptable turn of pace for long family motorway runs. Handling is ok but steering feedback is nil. I've never got my driving position as I want it as it's like driving a van, you're over the pedals instead of in front of them.
I'd look around at equivalent vehicles before committing to a Touran.
