Alright guys, having a bit of bother with my ka's ignition barrel.

The barrel was sticky so squirted some wd40 into it to loosen it up. Unfortunately the end snapped off the straw and after several attempts to get it out I've gave up.

To get the barrel out you put the key in and turn it(which I can't do), press pin on top of barrel and pop it out.

Assuming I can somehow get the barrel out, will I be able to replace it with one from a scrappy, also fitting the immobiliser unit that fits over the barrel and reads the chip, or will the ecu not accept the new immobiliser unit and I'll have to replace that as well?

Cheapest suggestions welcome without bodging it too much!

And I don't need reminded I'm a fanny, the wife's taken care of that.

I'd personally concentrate on trying to get the straw out of the barrel. It'll be alot cheaper and potentially cheaper. Have you tried a bit of glue or something sticky to try and pull the bit of straw out?

Or maybe try brute force?

Yeah tried brute force. Can get the key all the way in but it won't turn and it's hard to get back out.

I'm reluctant to put glue in the lock, maybe if all else fails!

How does the end snap off a wd40 straw?

Don't know about the ka but iirc on older fords you could knock the disks out of the bottom of the steering lock and then slide the barrel out.

The lock has nothing to do with the immobiliser, as long as that plastic disk is near the key the immobiliser will work.

You could unclip the plastic switch from the end of the lock and use a screwdriver to turn the switch and have the key taped to the immobiliser disk to start the car.

Did this on a fiesta once... Hammer chisel... Crack on !!

Then reform the barrel afterwards.

And yes the immobiliser should be in the transponder ring which should detach.

And if I replace the transponder ring with the new key will it work with my ecu or will that need to be the corresponding ecu to the new key/transponder ring?

Why are you changing the transponder ring?

I doesn't work like that, the chip in the second hand key to go with the lock won't work with your immobiliser. What most people do is tape the old key that works the immobiliser to the transponder ring and stick it all under the column, obviously the car isn't immobilised from thieves then but what are the chances of someone trying to steal it?

iirc you program new keys by turning the ignition on with the old key and then sticking the new key in within 10 seconds and turning the ignition on again, don't know if that works with keys that have already been programmed.

Just looked on ebay and you can buy blank transponders to go in the keys, so either swap the transponders over in the keys or stick a new one in and program it. A bit of googling says you may need 2 keys to program a new one, what age ka is it?

Changing the ring over the barrel will do nothing, that's just an aerial to read the transponder in the key. I don't know what happens if you swap the ecus over, I definitely wouldn't do that in a diesel ford.

I thought I needed to change the ring to go with the new key? Only got one key as well so if I tape the key to the ring it means starting the car with a screwdriver in the plug. Not a big issue mind but would rather have it semi presentable.

It's a 2002 model, don't think I mentioned that. And it's a complete shed which I've already spent to much on in the last couple of months. Let this be a lesson to you all, jump ship at mot time with sheds or you'll regret it.

Changing the ring won't help you as that's just an aerial, the immobiliser is in the ecu. As you only have one key then you have a couple of ways of doing it and I would go for this one..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Ka-96-08-1-3-petrol...

The other way would be to get a second hand barrel and key from a breakers then take the transponder out of your original key, stick it in the new one from the breakers to go with the barrel and use your old key to open the doors. Or you could take all of the door and boot locks from the breakers and fit them all.

The second one would probably suit my poor attempts at anything mechanical.

Still have the problem of getting the old barrel out as you need to put the key in, turn it, press the pin on top of the barrel and slide it out. Which I can't do as the key won't turn.

The only options I can see are to either drill the old barrel out or get busy with the hammer and chisel.

Thanks very much for your help so far.

No point using a chisel if you want to put another barrel in there, the amount of time that you save you will lose in trying to make the new barrel fit, slicing the top with a hacksaw also works. Slide hammer would be the best option but a drill will work with a bit of patience. Start off with a really small bit and then try to use the key again, you might melt the straw enough to be able to turn the key.

Just took the end off the barrel with an angle grinder, pulled the insides out and managed to get it out.

Got a barrel and key from a scrappy for a tenner so its just a case of swapping the chips over.

Thanks again for your help s p a c e m a n

Don't break the chip whatever you do hehe

It will probably start if you just hold the old key near to the barrel when you turn the ignition on, those transponders work quite well.
