Modern counterpart of the old car

What modern car is a counterpart of the car of old times.

I'm not including fashion car i.e fiat 500, MINI cooper, etc.
real deal car.

here is mine.

Rover SD1 = Audi S5
MGB = MX5
bmw 2002 = bmw m135

any else ?

I think of the cars I've owned and, if I had a new car now that was similar what'd it be.

I had a

TR7 = GT86
Escort Mk 4 = Focus
Toyota Supra 1991 vintage = Nissan GTR
Mondeo ST24 = Insignia VXR

You then get to modern stuff like an E class where I guess the equivalent is a new E class.

Obviously I'm not saying a TR7 is equivalent to a GT86 in performance but the person it was aimed at etc.

Very nearly. Follow the signs to Jurassic Park and you'll find Caterham on the left, just inside the main gates.

Modern cars with the same names as old ones have all moved up a segment though, e.g. old fiesta = new KA, old golf = new polo, old Granada= new mondeo etc.

Rather like the Ford Popular was the previous year's Anglia which was the previous year's Prefect. Nothing much changes.

My dad kinda followed this path with his cars:

1980s - mk5 cortina
1990s - mk2 Sierra
2000s - mk1 focus
Currently - mk3 (I think? 2011?) focus

He claims the fiesta he test drove felt closer in size to his mk1 focus.

MGB = MX5

Ford Cortina = BMW 3 series or Audi A4.
(320d = Cortina 2.0GL; 330i = Cortina 2.3 Ghia. )

Ford Granada/Rover SD1 = BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E class, Audi A6.
(In the Seventies or Eighties, the E28 and W123 sold in the same market segment as the Granada or Rover, but were lower volume equivalents, less likely to be a company car scheme vehicle provided by a large company.

It is astounding just how much the size of cars has grown over the years. Unfortunately roads, garages and parking spaces haven't.
