What to do with old 12v batteries?

I seem to have accumulated around a dozen old car batteries over the last couple of years, most of them XXL heavy duty ones. I could just run them down to the re-cycling centre, but they must be worth a bit as scrap.

Any suggestions on where to take them? I vaguely remember that they're possibly worth £5 each, but that may have been a dream.

Hook a solar panel and a 12-240v inverter and have some cheep lighting

Find a metal recyclers. They are paying something like £500/ton on lead at the moment. I got £18 for 2 batteries about a year ago, so 10 or so should give you a decent amount

About 50p a kg for batteries at a scrappy. Well worth doing.

Do the scrap metal people empty it of fluids are are you expected to so do beforehand as I imagine some toxic acid

Save them up and procure a large electromagnet just in case your laptop ever needs wiping remotely...

No need to empty them. I usually save up 12v batteries and do a trip to the metal dealer twice a year. Although the batteries I take are sealed alarm panel batteries, I have taken car batteries aswell.
