What car?

Hi!

Coming up to insurance renewal times and really wanting a change of car, I'm 20, 21 in November, 1 Years NCB and 2 Years of holding a license, so can't have many "fun" cars yet

I commute to uni, an 80 mile round trip with around half of those on the M6, 4 times a week. I currently drive an 07 1.3 CDTI Vauxhall Corsa, all be it cheap it's the opposite of fun.

Was looking at either a higher displacement diesel engine or other eco cars? Boring!!

What I'd like is something like an MX-5 but just considering my commute don't see this sensible?

Any one got any suggestions?

A motorway commute isn't fun no matter what car you're in. Dare I suggest saving your money, shedding it through uni, and then pick up something interesting when you've got more no claims and more money rolling in?

for a step up how about a Fabia VRS?

I had a 1.7 cdti astra sporthatch at 18 - you should be able to get an XP'ed 1.9 150bhp model for budget and re-map as insurance allows

Alternately how about something like an E46/E39 x30d or Volvo S40/S60/C70 D5 thinking out of the box?

@kiethton - I've looked at a VRS, they do look very boring but do they drive well? and wouldn't insurance rip my head off on a 3 series?

@zeduffman - I've also thought of this and keep getting told this by older friends etc and would probably be the smart choice, just so hard to bring myself to do it

Insurance on a 330d or indeed 330i shouldn't be too horrific, I had a 335i M-Sport at 21 and paid £820pa.

It is largely dependant on claim history and postcode though.

I've never driven a fabia VRS but have heard decent things - the Octavia is a little bigger and essentially a golf GTi underneath which could work? Bit more insurance friendly if you can live with the badge?

Also heard the few good comments, just a shame they're not that aesthetic! After owning a Corsa and the stereotypes that go with it, I'm sure the Skoda badges wouldn't bother me either haha!

However much I like the idea of a 3 series, I think my time for such car is a little further down the line for me, can see the cost of parts etc being quite costly?
