Golf GTi for 6k?

They are out there but difficult to find and you'll have to compromise on spec and colour. I had to travel to Manchester to get mine from the south east (found it on an owners forum).

I sold it last summer for £6k after a years ownership, sold for £250 less than I paid. It was a 2005, 3dr, silver with no options other than the 18" wheels, full VW history and 76k miles. It was due a service otherwise it would have gone for a bit more I think.

There should be a fair number of decent Mk5 GTIs for around £6k, though you see less GTIs for sale than you'd imagine. For that kind of money I'd be expecting a 2006 06/56 car with circa 70k and a full VW and/or specialist service history, a 60k cambelt change and signs it's been well cared for.

There are loads of threads round here, particularly on the VW subfoum, about things to look out for.

Spec etc is a very personal thing. I prefer the manual box to the DSG but find the throw a little bit long, so my SEAT equivalent will be getting a Forge adjustable short-shift kit at some point. On a GTI, I'd be looking for a 5-door in either red or the dark blue with 17" wheels, (18"s corrode and the ride suffers), leather and Xenons. I'd probably buy standard though a remap from a reputable tuner wouldn't put me off. I wouldn't pay extra for the OEM sat-nav as it's outdated and doesn't do full postcodes, instead I'd save my money and get at one of the android-based Parrot touch-screen units.

I don't know whether advertising ones own car is allowed but I have one that I am planning to sell when my new car arrives in April. My car is a 2006 manual 5dr in Diamond Black Pearl. It has covered just under 63000 miles to date, of which I have done 46000 in the 6 years I have owned it. I am an enthusiastic and active member of a number of VAG forums so my car has been very well cared for.

My mate is looking for a 5 door manual with leather aswell. Looked at a load of crap so far in the £5.5K region and having travelled for so called "immaculate" examples he's looking at upping his budget to £6k or so. But there doesn't seem to be an awful lot about at this price point at the moment.

I've just bought one for £8k but I was very particular about spec (red, 3 door, xenons) and went for a particularly nice and low mileage example. I think you could find a perfectly good one for £6k though it may have a few miles on it. Personally I think the cloth is much nicer than leather and the smaller wheels are better (mine has the 18s but I would probably rather have had the 17s) but each to their own.

I am very chuffed with mine though, I would absolutely recommend one to other people.

I personally think the leather that VW used on the MK5 was very poor. As such cars that have done lots of miles look very tired, with sagging and a sheen to it, and there's very little you can do to remedy that. In contrast my cloth interior gets shampooed regularly and looks pretty much brand new. Admittedly the GTI tartan isn't to everyones taste though.

Hi Guys!

I've been without a car for the past 6 months, as I've just not needed one, but now the time for a new (to me anyway) car!
I'm in the market for a MK5 Golf GTI. Do you reckon it is possible to find a nicely looked after one for my Budget?

I'm thinking of approximately 70-80k mileage, and ideally would like Sat-Nav & Leathers ( I just think it makes the interior look better). I also think the 5 door looks better so don't really want a 3 door.

Manual or DSG is another consideration of mines, preferring a manual as my mum who will also drive the car is more comfortable with one, but shes open to the idea of an automatic(DSG) if it is generally thought to be a better car.

Your opinions and or knowledge of cars that match my specification demands will be greatly appreciated!

They are good cars. I've had one for a few years now. Just one thing, it's 'leather interior' not 'leathers'!

I chose my GTI based on the cloth interior and the 17s - so much better over my local roads than the 18 inch car I test drove.

Massive fan, love mine to pieces.

Replied to your other thread. Mine (06 5dr DSG) has Cloth and 17s and I'm happy with the spec. Leather wears easier and the 18in wheels are more prone to damage, so although nicer new I'm not convinced they are used.
