From London To Sunderland, which route ?

I drive from the South Coast up to 'Boro fairly often and I have never had a good journey when trying the A1. I gave it three attempts, all at different times of the day but the M1 was always the quicker route for me.
My tried and tested route is up the M3, round the M25 to the M1, up to the M18 (just south of Sheffield), across to the A1(M) and then north to the A19 (just north of Tadcaster). The A19 then takes me into 'Boro, but would also take you on to Sunderland.

This is good advice. After Leeds/Tadcaster take the A168 to the A 19 which runs all the way to Scumderland. Early morning this is your best bet. I reguarly travel up from Berkshire to my parents in the dales, about 265 miles and I do it in 4 hours. I leave at 6am and can walk through the door at 10am.Just beware, there are 17 miles of 50mph average speed cameras on the M1 leading up to the M18 junction (J32).

ks. The M1 is fking awful at the moment with something approaching 20 miles of average speed camera 50 mph just south of the m18. Get there early enough you can even find them down to one lane. Adds substantially to the journey.
M11, A14 and a19 would be my solution, subject to no one falling off the road on the route.

Have to bond with Surveyor on this. There is always the one off chance that a route is buggered but I avoid the M1 unless there really is no option. I like the A1. All routes ghee days are a case of cruise control on and sit back for the ride. ks. I've been doing Midlands - Durham for the past twenty years, sometimes three or four times a week. The optimum route at the moment is M1 to J21a- A46 - A1 - A19. Misses all the bottlenecks and the A46 is now dualled all the way from Leicester to Newark. Just be careful when joining the A1 at Newark - the slip road isn't very long.
South of the Midlands, I would rather trust the M1 than the A1 / M11 / A14 variations any day of the week. Early Saturday morning it should be well-nigh deserted.
