Evoque/XC60 - manual vs auto - Resale

Hi, I'm about to order a new Evoque Pure SD4 5 door or Volvo XC60 D5 for my wife. She, for some strange reason, has a strong preference for a manual. Clearly it is cheaper, & would have a lower resale value. Do you think the car would be hard to sell on without pricing it very low, after say 2 years, or do you think that if it was priced say £1500 less than an auto will make resale easy? I don't want a dealer to make out he is doing me a big favour by offering me a low price. All advice most appreciated

Also, we are torn between the two, both fine cars. IMHO, Evoque offer better looks & better resale, Volvo has better perceived quality & feels like carved from granite, better interior, more space, bigger discounts. Both would end up within a couple of thousand of each other. Opinions please

Range Rovers need to be autos, and the 9-speeder in the Evoque is exceptional.

I came out of an XC60 D5 auto last year. Clicked 90k in 22 months and never broke, never aged and never disappointed. Immensely strong, your granite comparison is well judged.

Economy wasn't a strong point at 33mpg average and 6speed box always a gear or second away from what I wanted, but I am fairly spirited chap. I don't think it's directly comparable to an Evoque. They certainly will appeal to different people. I had the first one in the company car park and there's about 5 XCs to the same number of Evoques now. The Volvo is certainly more practical and I think it's comparable image wise now it's been face lifted too.

Perhaps a factor you could consider is dealer care? No idea on the RR experience, but Volvo were amazing....I should have got an S60, but got seduced by a 3:0d BM instead. Beautiful car, but dealer has been indifferent to date.

Are you leasing it or buying it?

If it's your own money the Evoque should give you a better residual value.

I have a 2 seater, & we live out of town so need a 4x4 to give certainty in the winter. My wife also suffers from her back so a high seating position is beneficial.

Will be buying with my own money.

If your only keeping for 2 years , then maybe you should consider leasing? You wont have to tie up your capital and worry about depreciation.there are also some good deals atm on the xc60

My dad has the manual D5 XC60 and I really don't like the gearbox. There's no foot rest so I just don't find it comfortable to drive for more than an hour and in this kind of car, an automatic would just be a much more relaxed place to be.

I also really don't like the clutch movement but Dad hasn't complained about it so I think that could just be me

The Evoque is just nicer to drive IMO and the interior is nicer in the right spec but you pay for it!

ETA: The XC is excellent other than the niggles I've pointed out - Handles well (Lots of roll but always more grip than needed) and the D5 engine is ace, so much torque when coming from my clio!! It's also incredibly comfy in the back and the boot is, obviously, huge compared to the evoque.

Never driven an Evoque but the XC90 has the most comfortable seats of any car I've driven. Coupled with a brilliant multi media system it's a no brainer. The LR is a bit too "fashion" for me - the XC is like an 80's Merc estate - not that flashy but timeless elegance.
