Golf R32 MK5?? Thinking of one of these.

Looking to buy one soon any owners or previous owners on here? I really want a v6 as i have got bored of 4 pot turbos and the E46 m3 is too much to maintain or i would have one. I got a insurance quote on the golf and its only 300 for the year so thats convinced me to look for one for one got about 10 grand to spend.

Lived with a girl who owned one, at the same time as me driving an 8P S3. When she first got me insured on the R32 I drove it everywhere - the noise was so addictive. Only took a few weeks for that to wear off though - found the V6 disappointingly lazy and sluggish compare to the 2.0 turbo.essIII said:

Ive had a s3 8p and found it to be really dull, it was stage 2 and the sound is boring after a while and the steering was to light, I much preferred my golf gti mk5 but i am a golf fan at heart. Lcfc84 said:

Know what you mean - moved from my Stage 2 8P S3 to an M135 - much more interesting to drive! Honestly think you'll find the R32 slow coming from any Stage 2 2.0 engined car, and there's no real scope for cheap mods on the V6 like on the VAG turbos.essIII said:

Its not all about speed for me tho mate, I want a nice soundtrack and grip and the insurance is really tempting as its so cheap.I've owned a Mk4 R32 and a close friend had a Mk 5 with DSG. As already mentioned, sounds great and goes well enough (although disappointing for the displacement imho) but a good sound choice. I really enjoyed the DSG.
Personally, I know you're bored of the 4 pots but for the Mk5 I would go for an Edition 30 or Pirelli. Think they might be a little more fun than the R32.

Miss it plenty.

I love my Mk5. It's a great all rounder, is nippy enough to match all but the latest hot hatches in a straight line, 4WD has been helpful with the wet weather we've had, is as practical as any other Golf and extremely comfortable. Servicing costs are very reasonable, although fuel and VED takes a bit of digesting. It's going to take something pretty special to prise me away.
i had an r32 mkv from new for 5 years and 50k miles (i bought it of the lease company i liked it so much)
even on the day i took it to be p/x'd it was still making me smile, i had a 2011 S3 for 5 months afterwards, such a soulless car in comparison
there not the fastest thing in the world but will go side ways everywhere on a trailing throttle
and get a miltech exhaust

Thats exactly what i thought about my s3 so soulless, was yours manual or dsg? I am not sure which one to go for, heard good stuff about dsg on a r32 even on the day i took it to be p/x'd it was still making me smile, i had a 2011 S3 for 5 months afterwards, such a soulless car in comparison

if i wanted a full on manual drivers car i would have got an R26 R
I wouldn't choose an R32 over an e46 M3. The M3 is a substantially quicker and more engaging car, and running costs won't be substantially more than the Golf if you steer clear of main dealer servicing. The marginal extra cost is (imho) justified by the substantially more enjoyable ownership and driving experience.
I found my R32 a bit disappointing - not all that quick, not a great driver's car, pretty thirsty and not very reliable. I wamted to like it. They sound great and are very practical. But then so's an M3.
If you're sold on the idea of a Mk5 Golf, I'd search out an Ed30 GTi rather than an R32.

Go for it, a capable machine that is also very practical.
I really liked mine, it was well built, drove well and contrary to what a lot of people say was anything but slow.
The big 3.2 was so refined and had such a linear power delivery that it didn't "feel" as quick as what you'd think, but it certainly shifted.
Just think, there is no chance of getting a big 6 cylinder N/A engine in another sporty hatch again, all we'll get now is small capacity turbocharged 3/4 cylinder engines that have no chance in matching the sound and charisma of big engines like this.
My one was in the cheaper tax bracket as it was an earlier example which cost a fair bit less for the RFL. It was also extremely reliable with only service items required.
