The current fad for flame spitting cars

What's the deal with cars like the P1 spitting huge amounts of flame under hard acceleration ? I thought in the days of carbs and basic fuel injection , you only got this on the overrun as unburnt fuel got burnt up if you lifted off quickly.
Is there actually a reason for the P1 doing it under acceleration, or is it engineered in for simply looking good on Top Gear and Chris Harris vids ?

This thread again? Full load overfueling cools the catalyst, its done on tedious shopping hatchbacks too, but they don't have short exhaust systems and silencer bypass pipes.
