Porsche Numbering - Someone please give me an idiots guide??

I just can't get my head around the Porsche numbering system. 911 997 bla bla?!?! Add a turbo it becomes something else, strip it out it becomes something else, add 4wd and it becomes something else.

Can you guys please give me an idiots guide to Porsche please? I love them but i'm totally lost as to how the numbers affect each model?!?!?!

911 generations = 964, 993, 996 (first water cooled), 997, 991
Boxster = 986, 987, 981 in sync with 911 model.

C2 = base 911 2wd, C2S = faster 2wd 911, C4 = 4wd 911, C4S = faster 4wd 911. Turbo = 4wd and faster, turbo S even more so ! Gt3 = 2wd non turbo track weapon, Gt2 = 2wd turbo charged widow maker. RS versions of GT2/3 even more lightweight, rarer etc...

I thought for the 996 'S' versions had Turbo bodykit but no different mechanicals.

Not quite.

The S has a wide body (same as Turbo). Its not a kit, its a wider body.
The S also has different brakes, stiffer suspension, different tailpipe detail and larger rims. Also a little more power.

Did the 911 GT1 ever have a model number? I know it was mid-engined and contained a lot of 962 elements, but was it classed as a variant of the 993?
