Wheel wobble.

Hey guise!

Got a bit of an issue..

My rear wheel in my Suzuki Swift 1.5 VVTs started making a knocking noise the other day it started slow and as i accelerated it got faster and faded out as i went over 20ish, then it came back as i slowed down.

I first thought (and so did others) it has to be the wheel bearing and it sounds like it. But when I jacked it up to spin it to check if it was the bearing it had some play (side to side) only when pushed. I have a feeling some of the nuts where loose so I did them up to the best of my ability but I will get a garage to do it properly.

The next thing stumped me, the hand break was on yet the back wheel still spun freely absolutely nothing stopping it. When trying the other back wheel that was firm.

As I'm not much of a mechanical car person I haven't got a clue what could be wrong.

I thought I'd rather ask here before taking it to a garage as they will charge me shed loads just trying to figure out what is wrong.

Any ideas would be great.

Are they discs or drums on the back? If it's drums then it sounds like perhaps the brake shoes have disintegrated.

It's a drum I think.

Is that an expensive job? I can imagine the labour probably is.

Without wanting to sound all granddad-ish (and hence I won't pick your post apart), if you don't know enough to be confident you have done the wheel nuts up tightly then you NEED to take the car to a garage, and soon.

It's just a guess, but the noise and lack of brakes would point in that direction.

Cost shouldn't be too bad just for replacing the brake shoes. However, if they've disintegrated there's a chance they could have damaged the mechanism inside the drum. However you'd be aware of a nasty noise if this had happened, so you may be ok.

Thanks for the advice, but surely if the wheel still wouldn't budge if the wheel nuts where done up?

Some cars have drums built into the disc for the hand brake, so could be this even if you have discs.

As someone's said take it to a decent garage (ie not kwik fit or the main dealer) pdq.

Great advice, I haven't driven the car much since the noise started and If i have I've kept it under 50MPH(this was for NSL).

I'm gonna ring a few garages up to see if they can give me some advice and maybe I have to catch the train for a while haha.

Pity the poor guy in front of you at 50mph when you have problems with your brakes and aren't confident your wheels are properly bolted on.

Make things easier for yourself; find one local garage who is good (recommended by friends or even by asking here on PH), take the car to them, explain the problem and ask for a cost to fix it. No garage will give a diagnosis on the telephone and you'll just annoy people by calling them up and asking lots of questions.

Seriously? You're not sure you can do wheel nuts up properly, but you're hoping someone's going to provide a diagnosis and fix that you'll be capable of doing? Take it to a garage.

Now, there was no need to be rude. No where in this topic did i say that I cannot do the nuts up properly.

If you read back what I said was "I did them up to the best of my ability". Meaning I did them up as best as I could.Not meaning I did not do them up properly. It's exactly the same if i put my spare tyre on myself I wouldn't be able to do the tyre up the same way a Garage could.

Does anyone recommend any good Garages in R.C.T? haha!

If you were confident they were done up properly you wouldn't be needing to take it to a garage to have it checked. The fact that you don't seem to know with any degree of confidence what a properly done-up wheel nut looks or feels like leads us to question your practical abilities.

I am not here to seek attention and do require assistance. The reason for my humor is that I can't imagine there are that many people from R.C.T on here and if they are the odds are slim they are watching this thread.
