Why do pedestrians act like lemmings ?

So was out and about early today in Edinburgh. 8 times today a pedestrian has just walked out in front of me without looking, causing me to ether slam on the breaks or swerve the car. To cap it off the look they give you......IT YOUR fkING FAULT. The majority of them have on these Stupid big Beats headphones and sunglasses. Do they not teach the green cross code in schools now?

a lot of kids just seem clueless, which is ok as they are just kids after all

i find the real problem people are druggies and young single mums pushing buggies

i guess they've probably never driven and have other things on their mind / everything else it someone elses problem syndrome

I'm a fan of dash cams and this is a great reason for em, clearly they could end you up in trouble too, but mine does encourage me to behave more

As a keen walker around London who also drives, and rides a bike, I find the number of motorists who seem not to know that you have to stop at a zebra crossing if I'm waiting to cross or sometimes even part way across, is just staggering.

If I am ever diagnosed with a terminal illness, my chosen method of euthanasia will be to throw myself in front of one of these s, in the happy knowledge that they will probably go to jail for killing me.

And my family will get a good few bob off their insurers.

Wel the thing is, the traffic doesn't actually have to stop unless you're on the crossing itself. If you're waiting to cross, cars are under no obligation to stop. It's polite to do so, of course. But that's the long and the short of it.

Fair enough.

On Saturday I was crossing on a one way road, 2 lanes. Some had stopped for me to cross and as I was crossing someone in the 2nd lane overtook him whilst he was stationary. If I hadn't seem him coming and stopped half way across the zebra, he would have wiped me out.

I always thought that the act of standing at a Zebra Crossing was sufficient to require a car to stop, if safe, and let you across.
Rules now appear to require the pedestrian to actually be on the crossing itself before traffic is required to stop.
Subtle difference but seems less safe for the pedestrian.

Why wouldn't anyone driving stop if they saw people waiting to cross? I can't say I have ever driven through a zebra crossing if there are people standing there?

They had to reduce the speed limit on our road to 20mph because old people kept walking out in front of cars. There's a pedestrian crossing right in the middle of the street but they wouldn't use it, they just push their trolleys into the road wherever they are.

Loads of people now walk out long after the green man has gone, yet they'll just stroll across the road knowing they are making you wait.

Some people just like to be wide.

Invariably young(ish) mothers. I never fail to be amazed and disgusted that they see no problem in using their offspring to try to stop the traffic.

I'd say two reasons spring to mind initially: They know they don't have to, and are in a (perceived) rush, don't like the look of the ped(!) or simply don't want to, or those that don't know and think, 'fk 'em, they can wait' for no real reason. Both of which, I guess, comes down to consideration of other road users. The lack of which should not be any major surprise if you've been driving for any length of time!

Actually, reading this again, that's the exact example the HC gives too! Turns out you were doing the right thing by keeping an eye out. Not that you need validation from a gov't document, and I am in no way trying to be a patronising douche either.

It has been the rule for as long as I have been driving - 38 years!

Think I will stick with the principle that if someone is wating at a pedestrian crossing I will stop for them, wouldn't want to have to chance stepping onto it myself so wouldn't expect others to have to.
